Post by: andreyo on February 24, 2011, 02:01:15 pm
Hi to all, my name is Andrei and i am from bulgaria.I have vw golf mk2 1,6td (jr) engine and i m thinking to mount a watercooled turbo from sb motor but i wonder can i mount it without attaching the water hoses to the turbo, only the oil to cool the turbine?

The K14's are only cooled with oil, As far as I know at least.
Im not sure how you would mount a water cooled turbo. You would need a way to supply a pressurized amount of coolant from somewhere in the car. My only guess would be to somehow tap a line into the water pump area. But I truly have no idea.

The K14 is water and oil-cooled. AFAIK the water cooling works only if it gets really hot, but usually it just runs off oil cooling.

I *think* so. I thought the watercooled units were t-2 garret and not the K14. Correct me if I am wrong guys as there are probably many VW twists out there but for the most part were not the K14's only oil cooled. Eco and 1.9L I am pretty sure were and the Eco was a US thing right?

My European K14 is water cooled as well as oil cooled. I have the SB engine :)

post pics of where the water goes and the general casting. Possibly a way around this but I would like to see it first.

Cars made for other countries had lots of little differences.

IIRC watercooled turbo cars have a waterpump with an outlet and a T by the upper rad to allow coolant to circulate.

The water circuit on my Subaru was mainly for after-run cooling to prevent bearing coking, the system is designed to circulate via thermal flow after the engine is shut off (and has a separate, high-mounted coolant tank), I'd suspect the VW system is similar... you don't need water running through it when in operation, the oil is plenty to keep it cool.

well i will mout the k14 without the electric water pump and the turbine will only cool with oil,and i think to make a custom down pipe but i dont know how wide. can anyone tell me what is the best size ,i am planing to go around 1bar with front mounted intercooler

that is correct.
on my "RA" intercooled engine the turbo is a water "afterfact" cooled T2
