Title: AON/ACN transmission on 1.6TD?
Post by: anarchyx34 on October 12, 2006, 04:14:19 pm
I'm currently running the close-ratio, but not highway friendly AUG transmission. The revs on the highway are a bit too high. Actually they're really high, and I like to drive fast, so no good there. :)

I'm thinking of getting the AON/ACN trans. which would be found in any mexican built 8v (makes me wonder why my mex. 8v had the AUG). Final drive, 1st and 2nd is the same, 3rd 4th and 5th are taller. The difference is this:

AON @ 80mph= 3254 rpms.
AUG @ 80mph= 3862 rpms.

That's a big difference. The only thing that worries me is how performance on the highway will be. I spend most of my time at 65-70mph, which currently sits at 3100 rpms. Passing power is pretty decent with it sitting at this rpm. It feels "ready to go" so to speak.

With the AON and it's .75 5th gear, I'll be doing 2600 rpms instead. Which is much nicer for cruising, but I'm wondering how the engine will respond when coming up to an incline or when the need to accelerate will be. From what I've felt by the seat of the pants, the engine dosent really seem to wake up until 3000 rpms. So it might be a slug pulling from 2600 rpms. I'll try later accelerating from 2600 rpms in 5th with my current trans to see how it feels, and just assume it'll be slightly worse with the AON trans. Or it might not be bad at all. (or I can just downshift to 4th if needed).

Has anyone used one of these trannies on the 1.6TD?

i have an ff transmission in my car, which is tall gearing, i dunno how it compares to your trannys, but i have plenty of passing power and acceleration on the highway,  i think mostly because of how quickly the turbo spools on the highway, but regardless, compared to my old non turbo engine, this thing is an animal on the highway, i can just floor it from say 65 and be going 100 in no time.  i did this the other day and some kid in a mk2 gti thought i was trying to race him or something haha.  my fueling was turned up the whole way or i would have played, and he would have been rolling up his windows to avoid all the smoke

Chances are dropping it to 4th will increase the engine speed by 500 RPM, which will put you at about 3100 which you say is where you engine wakes up. I say go for it.

Personally I'm running a 4S on my TD, and it seems fine to me, alot better then my 4A and FF were on my NA

i think the ach box i have right now is one of the best for an NA diesel
it was behind the NA engine in this car,and i had no problem gettin it to 85 mph
and it always seemed to have plenty of acceleration
from what i found out
the ach box was used on 85NA diesel golf's

I too just got an ACN for my A1, looking for the taller gears to replace the old four -speed GC.
If you seek economy, the taller overdrive is the way to go. Yes, it may be necessary to pull it down to fourth for acceleration, but with a small displacement engine, isn't this to be expected?
And you've still got the tall fifth for cruising...

anarchy, does your car have cruise??? if it does, then that is the reason why your car has such a crappy 5th.  Can't downshift with cruise

my car has cruise, and the rpm's are very high. 3100 rpm is 60 mph or 100km/h

I hate it... I need to get a new tranny sometime :(

The local junk yard here charges $800 for a tranny. They pull it for you but still. They only pay like $35 for your car if you drive it in! Sam artists...

AAAH. I forgot about A&T. They're right around here too. I'll call them tomorrow.
