Title: $500 86 Golf N/A diesel
Post by: Rat407 on September 06, 2005, 12:16:31 pm
Should I pick this up?  It has 226k on the odometer with a new IP on it and it runs strong.  Started up nice and just light smoke under heavy throttle. No oil in antifreeze. The body is in good shape. It is a four door with one door handle back passenger side doesn't work.  Blower motor doesn't work which means the AC is broke. No unusual oil leaks, tires are going to need to be replaced soon. Comes with an extra IP, three alternators.  Shifts nice, just installed a new clutch cable.  It is a 5sp.
What should I do?

A2 Golf diesels are RARE in the US.  If you are in need of another car, and it's in near-decent shape (which it sounds like it is!) I would snatch that up.  Not to mention the '85 Golf, being an A2 platform like your '91 Jetta, will share many parts, allowing you to inventory the same maintenance items and reduce your maintenance and labor costs.

buy it, my first vw was a 89 golf diesel and i loved it, they are great and so easy to work on, even a retarded monkey could rebuild one of those engines.

Just to let you know, if that same car was here in Denver area (or probably Bay area too), it would easily go for over $1000, maybe $2000.  I've seen non-running diesels sell for almost $1000.  Demand exceeds supply here so much.  If I wasn't already into a GTI diesel conversion, I'd be tempted to fly back there and pick it up.  Get it!

You'd be foolish to pass it up.  People are stepping over each other in the Pacific NW (US) to get their hands on them. A nice running Golf could go for twice or even three times that much around these parts.  Door handles are easy to replace and are a mandatory item in VWs. A knife and a #3 phillips are all you need.
