Hello everyone! I've been working on my jetta and recently I've run into a problem where my starter does not get power to the solenoid. Even when i short out the starter, the solenoid does not click. I took off my ground and cleaned it, made sure all connections to the starter are clean and no dice. Is there a fuse going to the starter? Unfortunately i thought it was the starter and just bought a new one...

Very possible that your ignition switch is bad.
Does the 97 have the clutch pedal switch? Meaning that you have to press down the clutch pedal to start it?

Yes, I do have a clutch pedal, But my starter wont spin even when its shorted out. Would the ignition switch stop the starter from spinning even when its shorted out? I'll pull my clutch pedal switch off and twist the wires together to test that.

You could run a wire direct to the battery,...
with a blade connector on the end.
Just touch the other end to the battery positive post.
Does sound like a bad solenoid though,
since it doesn't even click when you short the positive starter post
to the ignition wire terminal.
Seeing sparks?

No unfortunately i dont see any sparks. Sucks i might have a bad solenoid, its a brand new starter :'( I'm going to try running jumper cables from the the battery to the block and a positive to the starter to make sure my cables are still good though, just to make sure.

Well, i checked the cables and no dice. The new starter i bought has different spade connectors however, instead of just one that the red wire with a black stripe, it has 3, one male spade connector where the original spade goes to and 2 extra. When i give the two extra connectors power i hear a click of the solenoid but it still doesnt turn over ??? The part number of my starter is a Boche 068911023TX. I'm very confused what to do now....

Can you turn the engine over by hand?
Have you tried a wire directly from the battery to the solenoid connector?

i havent tried turning it over by hand, its a weird socket on the crankshaft pulley that i dont have (but im getting one) and i have tried a wire direct. I couldnt see the motor being siezed, it ran before. Just one day the starter stopped working. I'll do another followup post when i turn the motor over by hand.

The 'weird' crankshaft bolt is a 12pt 19mm. That is also interchangeable with a 12pt 3/4". Considering that both 19mm and 3/4 are super common sizes and unfortunately 12pt sockets are more common than 6pt, I am surprised that you do not have a socket that fits.

Don't you need to have power to that bigger stud on the starter and then tap the wire that makes the clicking noise? That click is the solenoid being drawn in and when it does that the power from the big stud is sent across to the starter motor and when it spins up it throws the gear forward into the flywheel.
Or do you have a different type of starter than the Mk1 I am used to?

Might help to run a extra grounding wire from the body of the starter to the frame or the battery. Have had grounding issues with the starter on a MK1 that were fixed by doing that.
