As a side note, I called Giles about the lines. He told me all AAZs had the taller 2 stage injectors and he’s never seen AAZ single stage injectors. He seems like an authority and I’ll take his word for it....

I've also heard that AAZs always came with the 2 stage injectors, but of course it's possible to run single stage injectors. The first motor I bought came with one single stage injector and three proper injectors, and lines that don't seem to fit any damn thing!

Well, I'm reluctant to tell Giles that he is wrong, but... he is.
I'm the original owner of a '92 Passat with AAZ Eco diesel, bought it brand new from the dealer. It had single stage injectors, I replaced them with two stage injectors. I needed new injector lines for the install, as the injector body length is different.
In fact I just found my old single stage injectors (have been sitting in the cupboard) and will post them up for sale.
