Title: 88 VW Fox -9.4" Vented Rotors swap right in ?
Post by: 2strokesmoke on September 20, 2011, 01:09:42 am
Hi Guys,
I recently purchased an 88 VW fox wagon, from someone on the vortex.
Great guy- he installed a 1.6TD in this car.
Purchased the car as a "conversion in progress"
I need to replace front brakes and was wondering if I could swap in 9.4" vented rotors.
I did this swap on my 82 caddy and love it !
In fact-they look like the same rotors.
Does anyone know if the vented rotors fit? and if I need to use a different brake pads to make the rotors fit?
Thanks a bunch !
Mike

The rotors *should* fit. check the width of the rotor and compare it to the slot in the pad carrier and see if it fits. You will need thinner brake pads though. I have no idea where you would get those. Maybe someone that has used up 50% of their pads?

You might be better off swapping the brake from a QSW. Those are also 10.1"

I did this swap on my '82 rabbit and '92 golf, the golf needed different calipers (wider) but it went easy after that. I would assume a fox would be the same, try looking up the part # for the caliper and see if it's the same as a MK2 golf/jetta.

Which swap? the 10.1"?

9.4 solid disks to vented disks..

10.1 requires different calipers and carriers. mk2 requires a different knuckle, and ball joints if its an 87 or older (caliper bracket integral to the hub, and 19mm ball joints, instead of 17mm balls)

I was asking in reference to what rabbitman was saying. The calipers do not need to be changed to go from non vented 9.4 to vented.

A MKI does not need the spindle changed to upgrade brake diameter and neither does the fox spindle (IIRC). Onl the MKII needs the spindle changed.

i was replying for rabbitman, i remembered his swap. he DID have to change his calipers. they were not wide enough to fit the vented rotors. first person ive ever heard of having to change calipers. all my solid-2-vented swaps have all been straight forward, no other parts to change besides the rotor its self.. were probably mexican calipers or something. all the cars that ive swapped, had german brake parts.

and sorry about the mis-information.. in my head i was thinking about the mk2, just forgot to add that part into my post, but i fixed it. thanks for pointing that out tho..

Wow, that is really strange. I have never heard of that. Is there a thread or something that he made about it? Pics maybe? Thats one for the database! :)

Yup it was strange, with the piston squeezed back it was still a 3/16" too narrow to fit over the vented disk and proper skinny pads. I compared with other vdubs around here and sure enough, the whole caliper was narrower so I bought new ones off amazon and viola, they fit. This is a '92 german golf that was never meant for north america so lots of little things are different on it........like no rear seatbelts........

You mean the dual rounds? hehe yeah I like 'em too. I've always liked quad rounds better though.......except that that's what everyone upgrades to.

They even have the little motors to adjust beam height while driving. ;D

Wierd. Makes sense though. My German Golf came with rear seatbelts and mine is an 87. Maybe yours was supposed to be a delivery vehicle or something?

$400 seems pretty spendy for a headlight levelling system. You could probably get the whole setup for about €150. I got a headlgiht and a switch for €20. Just need another headlight, two motors and a bit of wiring now..

Hi guys,
Thanks for your input !
So, we say the vented rotors should fit my 88 Fox wagon, with "stock" front pads ?
Or do I need front pads from another vehicle,to make them fit?
( for example: My 82 caddy needed 84 GTI pads to fit)
I'm purchasing 2 reman calipers and new hoses-for the Fox soon,so if I need to install something different, now is the time.
Thanks a bunch !
Mike

You will need pads designed for vented disks. Look for GTI pads, just make sure that particular GTI had vented brakes.

his pads might be worn enough to fit them already..

ive done a few swaps where i got to use the old pads even..

I'm pretty sure they say don't mix used pads with new rotors, vice versa is not recommended.

I think I'd lightly rub them on some sandpaper first just to give 'em that new texture.

Fox pads are totally different than MKII/MKI pads. He will need some pad that is designed for vented rotors or a pad that work with his application.

If that's the case I'd take new pads (if you can't get thin pads made for vented disks) and take a sanding belt to 'em. Or do it right and machine 'em down just until they fit over the disk.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your input !
After quite a bit of research, with many different model VW's and researching here and on on the vortex-I've come to the conclusion-the vented rotors don't swap right in,using NEW pads.
There are other options, using larger dia brake setups.
I've decided to stick with the solid rotors.
I purchased a pair of black zinc plate rotors, which are drilled and slotted, with ceramic pads, for $95 on ebay
Not what I wanted to install, but should help with brake fade non the less.
And this swaps right in-with no mods.
Thanks agian for all your help !
Mike

all you need is a mk1 brake caliper/carrier set up.. direct swap.. fox uses goofy calipers/carriers not ment to use vented..
