Will the caddy metal 1.6 timing covers fit on the mkii jettas 1.6?

Well sorta. If you swap all the mounting bits over they will, but the metal covers are not nearly as good as the mk2 plastic covers.

To be clear you should definitely have a cover in place but if you have a Mk2 backing plate and lower cover, then IMO, the plastic upper cover is a better choice.

Right, I’ve got the plastic ones but lower has a couple broken mounting holes broken so it’s looser than I’d like. Guess I’ll just order replacement plastics. I was only thinking about it because metal is more durable.

The main issue I have with the metal covers is that they only partially cover the belt and have open areas that are large enough to allow objects into the timing belt that can cause catastrophic engine damage. On an engine with the metal cover, I once had a bolt vibrate loose from the alt bracket support piece and fall between the metal cover and the head/block into the timing belt. The bolt got sucked into the timing belt and caused the engine to jump time while punching a hole in the timing belt and almost causing it to break entirely. The belt still had a 1/4" section that was intact. I was actually EXTREMELY lucky in that situation because the belt did not actually break and the jumped time only occurred at the injection pump and not at the cam so there was not any piston/valve contact. Still scary as all heck and cost a timing belt and a few hours of effort. I prefer the later covers because they are sealed enough to prevent anything from getting into the belt and ruining the engine.
