Title: Where to put a pyrometer probe in 1.6td
Post by: Familydiesel on May 04, 2009, 12:41:27 am
Where and how do you place a pyrometer probe in the 1.6 td exhaust?  I am thinking of placing it before the turbo, but where does it go, or where is the best pace, and how do you do it?
Thanks,
Greg

You're going to want to put it into the exhaust manifold pre turbo.  It's probably best to pull the manifold to drill and tap.

Where exacly is the best place to drill and tap the manifold?  Any place to avoid which is susceptible to cracking?
Thanks
Greg

Damn, too slow on the draw! Oh well... :P

Good stuff y'all.

Just don't even attempt it without taking the manifold off but that's where everybody puts them and it works great there.

wheres a good spot to put the probe on a VNT 17? i thought about putting it in my egr cover, but im not quite sure it will stick far enough into the manifold to get an accurate reading..

I got a VDO, EGT setup and am putting it in one of the bracket mount bolt holes:

I saw this done over on the old board, can't remember who posted it and the picture isn't there anymore.

...and 1 more:

Does it look like it sticks far enough into the exhaust stream?
I could probably grind off some of the extra threads and get it to go in farther.

Wait wait wait... So with this configuration you don't have to drill in to your exhaust manifold at all?  What motor was this on??

I would like to know about this as well.

Does one simply have to run a drill bit appropriate for 1/8 inch pipe thread tap thru the bracket bolt hole and tap it?
What year is that manifold off of?

thanks!

I would use a drill press. I tried to hand drill mine at first and when the bit dug-in at the end of making the hole, it cracked the manifold and I had to weld it...

Well if you used progressively larger drill bits it might reduce the risk of this. That's what I'd do anyway.

I used a number of bits to drill mine. I REALLY didn't want to crack the manifold.
LOTS of oil too while drilling.

I have my 1.6TD out of 92 Jetta getting ready to put into 82 Caddy and will be wanting to drill pyrometer hole now while out - I have not bought pyrometer yet - will be looking for one and wanted to ask where is a good place to purchase one - also since I do not have mine yet and may be wanting to intall 1.6TD into Caddy before it arrives what size hole and kind of threads would I need to drill? Is there a basic standard size for pyrometer sensors? After taking my ECOdiesel 1.6 out of 92 I noticed on the block casting it says 1.6D and not 1.6TD - now I know this is the original motor out of 92 ECOdiesel and it came with turbo from factory so I am wondering if this motor does have the oil squirters? I wouldn't think Volkswagen would put turbo on non-oil-squirter blocks - does any one know if this could still be a bonafided 1.6TD wihtout that casted into the botom back of the block and me taking oil pan off to find out?
