Title: 96 Jetta Aaz
Post by: RunninWild on July 10, 2016, 11:00:44 am
Well I finally got a vw! I found a 96 jetta with an aaz with only 60,000km!

Car has a salvage title as it was in a rear end collision (has been repaired) and was purchased not running. Judging by the carfax it looks like it has been sitting since 2012. From what I can tell it just needs an inspection to be able to be registered on the road again.

Finally had a bit of time to work on it last night. I installed some clear lines, a new battery and primed the pump and it fired right up, and runs great! Click on the pic for a video of it after first startup.

A quick rip around the block felt like it was a bit underpowered and the brakes were very bad. I'm thinking the power is due to the 4 year old fuel, and the brakes were slowly getting better the more I used them.

With a bit of work and a good cleaning this is going to be a great car again. I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to flip it once I get it back on its feet, or most likely just use it as a commuter and have it as a spare engine for my samurai. If I do keep it I may just swap my giles pump and k24 from the truck onto it as I think I was aiming for a lot more power then necessary for that vehicle.

Issues I've noticed so far:
Ebrake handle only clicks when you hold it to the right and will let go if you hit it
The seal for the drivers tailight in the trunk is missing
The shifter plastic cover is missing
Multifunction switch won't lock the highbeams on
Passenger side headlight lense needs to be resealed
Passenger door lock cylinder is missing
Suspension is a bit spongy, is this normal for jettas?

Looks pretty good sir!! Love those cars. Suspension shouldn't feel spongy.

Had a 94 AAZ Jetta. Loved the car, hated the major rot it had.

60,000 or 360,000? You know the odometer resets at 300,000 on these, right?

No I was not aware of that... Lol now I'm worried... All of the rubber and lots of little details on the car still look brand new though. I still think it might be 60k. There isn't even any evidence of any oil leaks or anything under the hood that would suggest it is high mileage. Oh well At least it runs well.

I did a carfax and icbc history report but neither of them provided any mileage numbers. Any idea where else I could check to verify? The only good thing about aircare was finding mileage reports for free. Too bad icbc doesn't provide that information.

The word "total" will disappear from the odometer screen when it starts its second journey around. Once it hits 300,000 a second time (600,000) the odometer blanks out and just shows some dashes instead. If the word "total" is still showing then the odometer believes it is on its first 300,000.

Oh cool thanks for the info! I'm out of town for work but I'll be home this weekend and have a look at it. Hoping it is indeed only 60k.I'm going to try and get my samurai back on the road before I start working on the jetta. Too much stuff on the go to deal with right now.

I think my plan is to swap the k24 and Giles pump onto the jetta and just run the k03 or maybe a k14 (if I can find one) with the fuel screw turned up a bit on my truck. I don't need the amount of power I thought I wanted on that thing. I'm just gonna chew through axles and transmissions. I mainly wanted diesel with it so I could go up hills on the highway and not slow down to 70km/h and the lower end torque for trails.

The K03 is good for stockish boost levels and will spool quickly almost right off of idle, very nice in a heavy vehicle as long as you aren't trying to push it past 14-15 PSI.

Yeah I think 13lbs and a bit more fuel would be perfect for the samurai. Its pretty light it's just got the wind resistance of a brick wall so highway driving has always been an issue.

Ahh balls no total looks like it's 360k 😞 wish I had of known that before I bought it. I guess that explains the bouncy suspension and crappy brakes. Now I guess I need to figure out if it's worth fixing it's issues and putting it back on the road or just parting it out. I guess it's time to track down a compression tester and see how healthy the engine is.

It's unfortunately pretty common to see "low mileage" Mk3s that are anything but. Even worse if you're in the states in miles rather than km!

360k is high but a well maintained diesel should still be happy with decent compression. Injectors will be due for an overhaul, valve guides are probably getting sloppy but it'll probably still be a solid runner with good compression provided it has had its oil and air filter kept clean.

Yeah I think it was fairly well maintained. The engine bay is pretty clean, no obvious leaks of any kind that went unnoticed. It even started 1st crank after sitting for 4 weeks after I originally primed it.

Unfortunately I'm not quite sure it's worth the hassle of fixing it and getting it salvage inspected. I think I might throw it up for sale on the forum and see if anyone wants it. Its probably worth more for someone to part it out then go through the effort of resurrecting it.

Going to compression test it and the engine in my samurai. If the jettas engine has significantly better compression I might put it in my truck then sell the other aaz and part out the jetta. More work then I want to deal with right now ugh...

FWIW I had a car go through the salvage inspection process last year here in BC. My car passed despite:

- all 4 wheel bearings needing to be replaced
- ABS light smashed out to keep it off
- incorrect rear shock installed on one side making the car sit 1.5" higher on the "good" side
- brake line leaking
- e-brake cables contacting the tires due to improper routing
- right rear wheel toed in about 3 degrees due to a bent axle beam

None of that was caught by the inspection. I unfortunately was just buying the car and was relying on the inspection report to tell me everything was OK. All of that is fixed now! Point is the inspection isn't that thorough.

Haha well that is good news. Any chance you remember roughly what they charged? I've been having a bit of trouble finding information on it. Is it the same inspection as an out of province or is it a special salvage one?

It's similar to an out of province inspection. The price was about $300 (the "shop" I was buying from paid for the inspection, plus added all of those problems for free). If you call any shop that is certified to do BC inspections they can do it for you. I obviously don't recommend the place they sent me to.

The undercoater is your best friend. Do it EVERY year.
