Post by: joakimahl93 on May 17, 2015, 09:40:12 am
hello!
i got myself a golf mk1 GTD from 83 and would like to add a oil temp and oil pressure gauge to it!

got no idea where to connect the gauges, if anyone got pictures of where to connect the gauges that would help alot!
have tried googling but couldnt find a good thread that helps me with this! found alot for the gti but not for the diesels!

cheers!

For the pressure gauge you can use the spot in the head where the sender for the idiot light is located. If you do that you will lose your idiot light, don't know if that matters to you or not. Personally I opted for the sender relocation kit from 42 Draft Designs. It mounts to the oil filter flange, and allows you to keep your idiot light. About $45 last time I looked.
I never have done a temperature gauge, but it seems I remember seeing a few posts on here about it. IIRC guys were mounting the sender in the oil pan somehow, either by some sort of combination drain plug/sender unit, or directly drilling and tapping the oil pan.

I used the port on the head for the dash low oil pressure LED. I used a steel 1/8 NPT nipple to a Tee for the line to oil pressure gauge and the VW oil pressure switch. The thread on the head is M10 x 1, 1/8 NPT is close enough to fit. I used the yellow teflon tape and it's been leak free for 3 years.

Similar to mine, I turned it 90 degrees and ran a different fitting on the oil pressure side.  Just a simple nipple from head to block tee.  I had this on hand so only needed time to install.

Here's how I did my pressure gauge. Sending unit is at lower left in first picture, mounted to tee with '42' in the middle. Second picture shows how it mounts to oil filter flange.

For a temperature gauge I did see that 42DD has a combination drain plug/sending unit. Looks to me like that would be the easiest way to go.

This is exactly what I was looking for! I know it's been awhile since this thread has been live, but it helped me!

Difference in pressures when one is taken off the flange right at the pump and the other off the end of the line basically when measured off the head.  End of the line to me is more important as it would show a drop in pressure before the one at the flange.

But I do plan a second oil pressure gauge for the flange mount I installed on the Caddy as that will be oil pressure to the turbo.
