Title: 4.3 V6 diesel... i need HELP!!!
Post by: R.O.R-2.0 on October 23, 2013, 04:58:25 pm
so, my room mate is debating on picking up an 85 olds cutlass (FWD) with a 4.3 diesel in it..

ive determined the car to have atleast one blown head gasket..

HEAD BOLTS are non-existent for this rare bird...

anyone have any solutions up their sleeve?

Do these engines use TTY head bolts, or regular old bolts with a TQ spec?

anyone have head bolt dimensions, or some old used 4.3 bolts laying around that i can take dimension from?

if i can determine the original bolt dimensions, i can call ARP and build up a set of studs..

Please, anyone, help me.. i dont want to see this oddity get squished...

LOL.. glad i got to inform you on this car..

Caddy Deville/Fleetwood had them, as well as the Chevy Celebrity, Olds Cutlass & 98, Buick Century & Electra, And the Pontiac 6000 was the lineup that included the V6 4.3D

VERY QUIET running GM diesel... MUCH quieter than a good running 5.7D

knowing wether i can FOR SURE get head bolts/studs for this car is the only hang up right now..

I would guess if it is similar to the gasser world the bolts/studs would be the same as the 5.7. I haven't worked on one either. If you pull a bolt or stud I could probably tell you what it is if I saw it next to something I knew.

totally different from the 5.7D.. had more head bolts..

6 per cylinder, rather than 4...

But if they are the same bolt just take 2 cylinders worth out of the package and throw them out or save them?

no dude, the 4.3D is not like a 5.7 gas and a 4.3 gas...

the 4.3D uses 14 bolts per bank, where the 5.7D uses 10 bolts per bank..

the head bolts on the 4.3D remind me more of 454 head bolts, than 5.7D head bolts, being that there are 2 different lengths..

supposedly, the 4.3 DOESNT use TTY bolts either... im just hesitant to re-use head bolts in anything besides a toyota or honda...

still need to determine a tq value for the bolts... otherwise im just going to go with my gut.

Try calling a dealer. Maybe you will get lucky and someone there will be into the old diesel or have an old book.

If its worth anything I might have a chilton's mechanics manual that covers most of Domestic cars from 85-86. ill have to double check to see if they say to reuse the headbolts.

i KNOW the V8 IDIs used TTY bolts.. ive heard conflicting evidence that the 4.3D used regular old bolts...

no concrete evidence as to TTY or regular tho..

if you have a book that will tell us what bolts it uses, or even just a torque spec/tightening sequence, that would be great!

Ill search for the book set tonight. How long did they make the 4.3D cutlass, and the 4.3D used in any other GM vehicles? Need to know as I have 3 books and cannot remember exactly what years the books cover as they have been sitting in a closet for over 3 years.

they started in 82, with the cast iron headed engines, and went till 85 or 86, then stopped production..

the one im working on, the engine was a goodwrench replacement (85 book will definitely cover it)

Cylinder head bolts 142 ft pounds for headbolts except 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14 are 59 ft pounds.

The book says nothing about TTY bolts.
Ill post a picture of the procedure from the book later.

I just can't imagine GM using TTY bolts on anything in the 80s... technologically, they were way behind the curve at that point.

I agree - I would be utterly amazed if GM used TTY head bolts in the 80's.  That kind of technology was way beyond their level of practice at that time.
