I turned it into a pdf because I didn't want to keep multiple picture around and end up loosing them.

That is a REALLY good article - and pretty much bang on with "standard practice" for many years since on pre-TDI 8 valve engines.  BTW: if you haven't ported an IDI - you haven't lived!  Freeing up the airflow (including exhaust) makes some fantastic power AND economy.

I'd love to spend more time on something like this.

I've learned for years and years how to blueprint and port 2 stroke engines [motorcycles/jetskis/even garden trimmers :P ]to increase efficiency and double the power output, but when it comes to 4 stroke engines, I'm clueless.

I'd love to have a benchmark freshly rebuilt properly broken in engine to compare towards a ported diesel engine.

Thanks for posting this article.  I was looking for it to reference for our LeMons rebuild, but couldn't remember where I'd seen it.  Googling for "Vizard article VW engine" brought it right up.  8)

Here's an archive of old VW Motorsports articles I found when trying to find where to stitch weld the chassis, thought others might be interested as well:    http://www.vwmotorsport.info/vwmedia/vwmedia.asp

Mind sharing the cost of doing a cylinder head?

I got a quote of 300 to refresh the head and 400 for a port and polish.  A shop near me has the flow bench and setup to do 8Valve VW engines.   I can't wait, I've heard good things about doing this!

It appears that the link to the article no longer works?
Shame as it was a good read! Did a bit of googling, but can't find it anywhere on the net.
