Title: Looking at buying an 06 Jetta TDI
Post by: Tmarkle on August 07, 2017, 08:06:31 am
So yesterday I went and looked at a 2006 Jetta with 160k. Cosmetically car checked out other than a dent on the fender. Car drives very nice and has plenty of power. There is just two little things that stuck me. When driving, if I smash the go fast peddle, there is a small delay then bang you feel and hear the turbo spool and she starts accelerating. Is this normal for a car with a vnt? I'm coming from the IDI world where you just smoke till the turbo spooled lol. It has good power and runs smooth otherwise, I figure this is just the way the vnt works but I wanted to check with people who know more than me. This would be my first TDI. The other thing is that coming from buying Cummins pickups I always check for blowby by popping open the oil cap. When I did so the cap bounced and there was some gas coming out of the oil fill. Previous owners claim it used no oil. So do these engines naturally have some blowby or is something worn out? The asking price is $2000, which is tough to turn down.

The newer engines will pretty much never smoke unless there is something wrong. It should spool fairly quickly but it definitely won't pull till it does.

Smaller 4 cylinder engines have a much higher pulsation factor than 6 or 8 cylinder engines. Pretty normal for the oil cap to jump around on any of the VW diesels, old or new. If it blows right off the engine you might have an issue but every 4 cylinder diesel I've been around will make the cap dance.

Well this is awesome. Drove the car TWICE test driving. Only issue was I could hear an egr hiss, which I was hoping to eventually delete anyways. Go it home and it idles slightly rough and threw a check engine light.

Ugh - always hard to know if someone has cleared codes right before you show up. Stuff does sometimes just happen though.

Generic scanners will show you what emissions codes are present, though you really need VCDS to see details.

Code was for glow plug #3. The idle issue seems very close to a DMF failing. A little shimmy at idle and some rattling from the bell housing. The hiss is the typical EGR exhaust leak. I'm still not too disappointed, car drives great down the highway.
