Title: Turned up fuel on 1.6td
Post by: homerj1 on July 11, 2013, 05:54:29 pm
Hey, I just turned up the main fuel screw on my 1.6td with automatic - only 1/3 of a turn - and man the difference!!

The engine pulls a lot better, and the egt's increased about 20%. ( running about 475 deg C. - with the pedal to the floor ( remember automatic trans.  ;D) but just ran it around the block

The intercooler this weekend - hopefully

yep I play with 1/4 turns and that seems to be easy to note the difference once you are close.

How do I exactly know I am close enough?  Egt's, smoke? or a combo of the above?

Also, don't want to scatter the 1.6td.

Also, I suspect avg. weather conditions are needed? Currently,  hot as hell here on PEI - ( i know 30 deg. C, isn't that hot,  but is is here)   :P

I always tune for performance and EGT ceiling. Whatever EGT you are comfortable with. I am trying to stay under 1200F more likely 1400F.

I have been toying with egt's in my 79 rabbit and using auber electric gages.

I have what I thought was stock fueling and an open exhaust and my egt's are higher than I would like when comparing notes.

I also do not get steady smoke on or off boost so that freaks me out a bit.  I will get a little puff inbetween hard shifts.

The highest I have hit is 1350 but have learned I am actually better off in these situations downshifting to 4th gear and screaming the car at speed limit of 65-70mph on our freeways.

5th gear lugging and partial boost is the worst.

I noticed that just idling this rabbit has a higher egt than my stock exhaust 82 truck.  I am actually planning to daily drive that starting tomorrow so will compare notes.  rabbit has t3 and stock boost, truck is k24 and stock boost.

The settings may have been tampered with on my rabbit so I may screw with it in the future or mod it, not sure what to do.
