this weekend our 99.5 golf tdi threw the serp belt...I wasn't real surprised as it was in horrible shape and soon to be replaced. I got a new belt in the way home and installed it right away. after about 15 min the new belt resembled confetti. the idler wheel above the ac pump was laying on top of the ac pump with a large chunk of the bracket still attatched. is there anything I should know before attempting to remove the bracket, it looks like the ac pump, alt, and ps pump have to come off, but its really hard to see in there. any advise would really be helpful.

ALH or AHU? 99.5 was the transition point, so I assume ALH. If so, then the injection pump needs to be removed also. Nothing else really to it. If memory serves there are four fairly large (m10 or 12) bolts that hold the bracket to the block.

it's an ahu and I was afraid of that. I haven't been into the timing on this generation yet, is it basically the same as the 1.6? set and lock everything and triple check alignment and turn numerous times on reassembly? I've done the 1.6's all kinds of times but I haven't touched the tdi yet. (I do have the tools though)

If it is an AHU then the timing and injection pump can stay put. But a 99.5 should be an ALH!
