yes, but do not use 1st gear as there is a lock for the 'parking brake'.  use 2nd gear instead.  also you'll need to push it quite a ways if the glow plugs aren't cycling on.  and another thing, the fuel stop solenoid requires 12v otherwise fuel doesn't flow... so you'll need to figure out a way how to give the solenoid some juice.  i wonder if once you get it moving, if the alternator can give it enough juice to kick on.

If the battery is totally dead, the alternator won't produce anything. Only a generator will, which no cars have any more.

if the battery is totally dead there is no hope, but if it just is too dead to start the car, usually it will have enough juice to run the solenoid and excite the alternator.
I have rollstarted my diesel many times, I use third gear, as it gives more mechanical advantage to the pulling and requires less of a hill.
also, I hear about this lock in first gear, and have never run into it, if I put my car in first on a hill and let it sit it will "walk away" just like if it is in second, albeit slower.

um the car shouldn't move in 1st.  you should be able to put it into 1st gear on a hill without the hand brake, and it shouldn't move.  something must be busted in ur tranny.

good to know about the exiter wire.. is there any solution?

I have popped it in 1st before, although 2nd works waaaay better.
1st will work if you have 4 200lb guys in the car and you are on a steep mountain road coming back from a weekend of camping and drinking.  Not as smooth as second though, people spill all over the seats

That solenoid on the pump only needs about 3.6 volts.  I tested it with a power supply and turned the voltage lower and lower and the engine did not shut off until about 3.6 volts.  So the battery has to be REALLY dead for the solenoid not to supply fuel to the pump.

That is handy information and the alternator takes a dump right before a 5 hour trip while half the trip was in the dark.  We ended up unplugging one of the head lights and made it just fine.

That is very good info to know, hopefully I will never need to find out. :!:
