A couple of times a month , when the car is cold ( well, chilly- this is Florida), I will start the Jetta , drive about 5 minutes down the road at moderate speed (35 mph in 4th) and the car will sputter and die. It will restart, then go another 2 minutes and try to die again. After that, no problems.
I changed the filter and checked the "out" bolt. Any other ideas? I had been running Murphy Oil B20, but today I filled up with the real stuff just to see if that matters.

Sounds like a fuel related thing as if it were air nothing would change for the good the hotter it gets. Maybe the B20 loosened something up and your screen in the pickup plugged partially? I am grasping at straws, but warm diesel flows better than cold and that could be a long shot.
Other than the obvious air in fuel lines, engine idle speed, pinched line, fuel gelling, etc.

If it's a stock filter, I'd wager it's the silly tee fitting leaking.

I don't think a Florida car benefits much from the recirc feature, so I'd get an earlier filter and eliminate that fitting. I even do it up here (-12F this morning)

I have replaced the MkII filter with a MKI- screw-on. I have a clear Mercedes pre-filter in front of it to see what my fuel looks like. About a year ago I had a leaking return line (leak was a couple of feet behind the filter where the line goes into the chassis) so I had a lot of water, but that has since been fixed and there no significant water now.
No issues in the last 2 days, since I got away from the B20. But, it was a very random occurrence anyway.

In that case, as theman53 suggests, some Power Service 911 to prevent gelling and perhaps dissolve any crud might help.
