Looking for the shifter box, cables, cables bracket and cable end connectors to fit my 2001 Jetta tdi. Please PM me for reply.
-
do the new transmissions have the same shift pattern as the old rabbit 5 speeds? if so I cannot help you but if they have reverse to the right and down then I have a box that will work for you that I need to get rid of by the end of the week or it wil probably get thrown away. worst case you could use it and not have reverse for a little while?

Did the old Rabbits have a cable shifter? I already have a 5 speed shaft and linkage style shifter in the 1998 2.0L Jetta this is going into but I need a cable shifter set.
-
Rabbits had mechanical linkage. The 02A cable-shift tranny parts are also NOT compatible with the 02J cable-shift tranny. TDI 02J cables are the same as any other 02J, be it VR6 or 1.8T.
I also need an 02J cable shifter and cables. Nobody wants to let go of one for less than $200!!!
Brendan
P.S. Also, NONE of the Rabbit, Golf, Jetta, Scirocco, Caddy or Cabriolet had reverse to the right and down, they have always been push down and left-forward. The Passat and Audi's with transverse mounted engines have it to the right and down. Not sure what shifter box you have???
-
can a Passat set of cables work on a Jetta?
-
If you look online at a few stores, you can find a MKIV shift box new from an aftermarket vendor for like $85. I can't remember off the top of my head which site it was though.
-
can a Passat set of cables work on a Jetta?
Only if the Passat had the same type of tranny as the Jetta. IIRC, the Passat up to the B5 only had an 020 or 02A tranny, if the tranny for the Jetta is an 02J it will not work. The B5 and later was a completely different animal.

I know that the box that I have will not completely work with an 02J, I can get all of the gears with it except reverse, and I had a hard time finding the correct one as well, I have like 35 bucks into the incorrect one, if you want to get by with out reverse for a little while you can have it for shipping its the entire box with cables and ends, you might be able to modifiy it to get reverse to work with some clearancing
when I bought this shift box the guy said it was from a VR6 jetta but truth be told I dont know what it is from either
good luck

ok...here goes..
020... solid "linkage" shifter setup and a cable clutch
found in MK1, MK2, MK3 (2.0 gasser) Also... AAZ motor cars also got the 020
02a is found in the Corrado...both VR6 and G60 applications, the passat(16v, VR6) and also MK3 Golf/Jetta VR6 applications...
02a is cable shift tranny with hydraulic clutch setup (w/ exception to across the pond which were lucky enough to get the cable clutch version).
VR6 02a's have a different bellhousing to adapt to the VR6 motor, but the bell housings can be swapped out for a 4cyl style unit.
The MKIII and B4 Passat TDI's run a 02a style tranny that will take 02a style cable box and cables (attach at shift tower), however this particular 02a tranny shares parts with the 02j trannies used in the MKIV. Particularly the CTN TDI transmssion use 02j style "bolt in" axle flanges and therefore a 02j style differential. Also with the CTN you get a "shift weight" of sorts that attaches to the shift tower providing a bit more of a positive feel in shifting.
True 02j is MKIV + and the shift cables are different as well as the tower (namely, looking at the MKIV cables, they are much thinner at their connecting ends where they connect to the shift tower)...
There is a MKIV shift box in the pick a part here...
Then...we can go into 02m...but, alas :)
Hope that makes sense....thought i'd explain a few things!

euhh!! :? On my MK2 TDI, I have a 02J MKIV tranny and a old Passat shifter cable, I make a very little modif to adapt this cable to the 02J shift tower.
-
So I can use the Passat shift cables. I don't mind modifying the cable ends. Just have to find that shift box now.
-
ya...you can, as Martin has pointed out. It does take some modification, but has been done many times before :)
I've got to look on here somewhere...i think someone had posted or had said they would provide the layouts for 02a/j style mounts to mount it in an MK1... I may try building my own as finding them on the open market right now isn't the easiest thing to do.
A few on the vortex make them...but, haven't seen any in a while! Mk2 would be SOOO much easier!
my 02a cable shift clutch goodies came today all the way from Finland though! :)

So you can modify 02A box and cables for an 02J tranny? Go figure. :) I've not seen any info for that yet.
And I'll be sourcing my mounts from Dan Bubb, or J. Daniel on the VwVortex. They are a little pricey but fit like butter and include everything you need to drop them in, like stainless hardware. They come powdercoated as well, and he modifies your passenger side mount and will press in the new rubber mounts too. He makes them for 02A and 02J trannys. Some pics:

I've met Dan before (he's an older guy, not some punk kid!) and he really knows his stuff.

Ah, I see you're between Columbus and Mansfield.
On my MK2 TDI, I have a 02J MKIV tranny and a old Passat shifter cable, I make a very little modif to adapt this cable to the 02J shift tower.
[/b]
What shift towers can I use with the older Passat cables? Can I modify the 02A tower from the Passat to work on my 02J?

the 02a shift tower will bolts right onto a 02J. There are 2 types of 02a shift towers and you need to make certain you get the shift box from the same style. the differeance in the shift boxes is the way the cables are bracketed to the tranny.
There are also two types of 02J shift towers and shift boxes. The early have the same shift towers as the later 02A and had slightly different shift boxes.
I have a set of early style 02J shift cables and shift box $75+shipping

Oops. Just paid $100 for a complete set, cables and tower on ebay. There's 4 more sets on ebay right now. Also a nice 2005 6 speed manual FZO for $1,500 or buy it now $2K.
I am in the market for an end connector for the range shift cable. Got one?

Ah great, now I'm really confused. :P I think my tranny is from an 00 or 01, would the cables and box you have fit? How do I tell (by looking) if it's the early or later style tower?
All this time I thunk they were the same.

2005 6 speed manual tranny for $1500? not bad

Those mounts look slick, I may have to contact him and get a set on order. Would save alot of work on my part and I don't mind spending money for someone that has done the job nicely several times over...rather than trying to copy what they are doing.
The 02a and 02j boxes are so much fun...lots of options, very slight differences between the years and the CTN trans is particular is a weird combo of o2j and 02a all rolled into whats basically a 02a box...
I CAN'T WAIT until i have the CTN trans in the car...I just think about how useless 1st and 2nd are with the 3.89 final....just imagining the possibilities I'll have with the new trans installed :) Should be fun!

How are the ratios on this CTN different than the 02J?
-
"CTN" defines the transmission code...and therefore the ratios in the box...
The CTN is still an 02a tranny (though it is a half breed w/ a 02j style diff and bolt on axle flanges)
These are the mk3/b4/MKIV 02a/j TDI transmissions and their corresponding ratios:
CTN has 3.778=2.118=1.360=1.029=0.755= FD 3.157
Are found in the MK3 Jetta/Golf/Passat TDI (Has 02J style output flanges. For LSD you usually have to order the 02j diff)
DQY has 3.778=2.118=1.360=1.029=0.755= FD 3.389 Jetta/Golf TDI
Then there is an oddball
ASD has 3.300=1.944==1.308==1.09==0.717==FD 3.16 from a Euro MK3 TDI (few available in states and/or have been brought over)
