Title: FS: Parting out 1986 Golf diesel, car in Marengo, OH
Post by: bhtooefr on November 30, 2008, 07:03:54 pm
The car currently starts, runs, and will drive around my mom's driveway, so you know that much works. ;)

The car is located in 43334.

For the purpose of body parts, the car is Deep Cosmic Blue LE5C, although I've also got a few Quartz Grey Metallic LA8V doors off of my old Jetta lying around if you need those. Interior is blue, I also have a black dashboard out of that Jetta (I think, anyway.)

Engine was reringed approximately 23,500 miles ago by oilhammer, timing belt was done approximately 28,000 miles ago by MOGolf. Since the reringing, it's been run on Rotella T 5w40 synthetic oil. For approximately 20,000 miles (not the last 20,000, though,) it was run on B20 biodiesel from the Sunoco in Mt. Gilead, OH. The IP did not leak. (Engine has SOLID lifters.)

Odometer on this cluster works, and reads 193,1xx miles. However, this is not the original odometer, and the face on this cluster is cracked (you can't really see it with the cluster installed, but it is cracked.) I do also have a cluster reading 204,xxx without a cracked face, but the odometer doesn't work.

Transmission needs a mainshaft and replacement 5th gear, but is otherwise good. Maybe it'll be good for parts for someone or something...

The car has a pair of Recaro seats out of a 91 GLI, they do need recovering, though.

A pair of Hella 6054-replacement E-codes is available.

Ask if a part is available, and make an offer if it is. =)

Partial price list:

Engine with injection pump: $500 OBO

Pair of Recaro Mk2 GTI/GLI front seats (non-power): $100 OBO

Transmission: $35 OBO

Hella H6054 E-code replacement lights: $50 incl. shipping within US OBO

With Westy radiator support and beat up grille: $75 plus shipping OBO

Westy radiator support and grille alone: $40 plus shipping OBO

Window regulator: $25 incl. shipping within US OBO

List of stuff that is sold:

Instrument cluster (one still available, with a broken odometer)
Steering wheel
One center cap for original steelies (three still available)

You'll have to arrange for shipping yourself, if you choose to go that route.

FWIW, before I get any other IMs... this engine's out of an 85 Jetta, and is 85 in every way. Solid lifters, no idle boost on the pump, no ADA, nothing. That stuff didn't start until 1986.5, so even if the Golf had its original engine, it'd still be 1986.0 stuff. :)

Also, at this time, I'm not interested in separating the pump from the engine.

Pretty bad rust, the unibody's tweaked from a collision, and I just decided not to deal with it any more. ;)

ACH. Do note that the 5th gear and mainshaft are shot, though, so it's effectively a 4-spd now. Great for parts, or for something dirt cheap to get your dead car moving, but that's it.

(Unless, of course, you want to replace the mainshaft.)

Dashboard pics (lower dash isn't installed, but I have it. Center console is a regular blue one, not the 1985 Golf diesel console.)

I don't have a pic of the grille, but I will note that the clips are broken and chrome is pitted. :(

I got a really rough quote of $30, but I'm not sure if that'll be accurate, considering how big the box will be, and I was assuming 25 lbs per seat.

I'll ask someone who regularly ships seats how he packages them, and about how much weight to expect...

(And, that quote doesn't include packaging, so...)

Oh, and let's just say that I think that quote will be quite low.

I've heard people on other sites talking about how you could package two in one box if done the right way, but that was with stock seats. Don't know if those are bigger or smaller in volume.

These will be bigger, at least somewhat.

The person that I talked to did say that it'd be best if I packaged them in two boxes.

Think I'll be going out to the car on Tuesday, so if anyone wants anything, let me know.

mtnbob: I might try to find a scale, and weigh the seats, and take them apart to get accurate dimensions, to get a better quote.

I have the exact same car, however mine is a 2 door. Can you post pics of the hood, the front fenders and the rear hatch? I drive a semi to Columbus from Toledo every Wed. I could possibly swing by and pick up the above items if the price is right. But would like to see pics b4 I make the trip. Thanks!

You don't want either fender - the driver's side one is crunched, the passenger side one is a rattlecanned fender off of a German white car, I believe.

I'll get pics of the hood and hatch, though.

Aircleaner top isn't spoken for, someone on Vortex was interested in the hood and hatch.

Also, I'm not going to be able to get to the car until Friday due to weather, so...

I wasn't able to make it out to the car today, as I posted yesterday, due to weather. I'll be going there Friday. You're still first in line for those.

Yes, I am the same "GIDDY_UP_GO" on the Vortex site as well. Just let me know, I am in no hurry. But the only time I can get with you would be on Wednesdays. I drive a semi truck and go to Hilliard, Oh. every Wed. I could swing by and p/u the items enroute.

Hi
I have an idea. Do you ever go near Columbus or Mansfield? How about wrapping the seats up securely with an old sheet, and sending them Greyhound? I have a student discount that is either 25% or 50% off. 2 -35 pound packages(seats) were $75 before the student discount. maybe $38-$55 after the discount. Plus you don't have to package them as securely as you would for UPS or the post office.

just a thought

Robert

Hmm... That might work.

The only issue would be getting the seats to Columbus, as my only car is the Miata, and I wouldn't trust my mom's truck for a drive to Columbus.

You see these for sale here on Vortex all the time and many sellers are reluctant to ship them because of the cost. Here is a way to cut the cost way down and offer them to a wider market.

To ship cheaply you must disassemble the seats. Whole operation takes maybe 30 min once you know what you are doing.

First, you take off the backrests. To do this you must remove the plastic hinge covers. In each cover, push the three little plastic pins all the way through the back side then pull off the cover. The one on the adjusting knob side stays on the seat but swings out of the way. Now you remove the flat circlip on each hinge pin and pull the backrest off.

All of the little removed parts should go in a large zip lock bag.

Turn the lower sections over and each has 6 allen head capscrews holding the electric base on. Remove them.

Next is the trickiest part, removing the headrests. All of the covers on your seat are held in place by little wire rods which run in seams around the border of the cover. Every so often there is an opening in the seam and the wire is exposed. These exposed sections hook under little tabs that are punched into the metal of the seat frame. So you stick your fingers into the joint between the perimeter velour cover and the center section with the little red and green stripes. Do this right under the headrest. If you spread this joint open, you will see three of the above mentioned attatchments and it will be real obvious how to unhook them. You will have exposed two "bobbypin" clips. Pull the clips and the head rest will slide right off.

So disassembled, both seats and bases will fit in one "shorty wardrobe" box that you buy from a Uhaul dealer for $7.95. This box measures 34" x 24" x 20". The whole mess weighs 90 pounds. I FedExed this whole thing from the San Francisco area to upstate New York for $62.90. 31 Oct '08 update: This must have been a mistake on FedEx's part. Have shipped many pair and you should count on more like $90-$100 cross country.

Good luck, George

Stolen from Vortex..
