Title: Gasser to Diesel
Post by: 8v-of-fury on September 23, 2008, 10:16:12 pm
Ok well, I am new to vw's and i am most certainly new to deisels. Ive got a line on a 1991 golf 1.6 NA. this will be my donor car where i will take its engine, tranny, starter, and harness and move them to my 84 Jetta. NOw im not asking for you to tell me how to do it, but what am i looking at.... engine swap obvioiusly... easy to do? or what?

1991.. what will this engine be.. ive heard a bunch of engine codes for diesels bein thrown around.. i dont kno anymore about it than that... whats the possible outcomes of this engine being? How hard and expensive will it be to go turbo in the future? SORRY for being such a n00b... im just feelin out  the situation.. an i have come to love diesels from your smoke tales posts.. absolutely loved them! almost pissed myself laughing on some of them... Can you help a fellow dubber out?

Welcome to the forum!  As you've already discovered there is a real wealth of knowledge here.  The engine swap itself should be fairly straight forward.  The mounts are the same between gas and diesel.  You will have to make sure you have all the diesel specific parts such as the fuel filter, fuel filler neck, glow plug wiring etc.

The engine code in the '91 golf should be ME if it's a N/A.  The code for true TD is MF and eco-diesel is 1V.  Turboing an N/A motor is a bit of a debate but you should be fine if you aren't going for huge power.  The turbo motors did have quite a few modifications to help them withstand the extra pressure and temperature of boost.

Edit: Just noticed what forum we are in.  The vehicle in question is in fact an IDI (indirect injection), not TDI (direct injection).  Can we please get this moved to the idi forum?

Yes i have been reading through countless posts for hours now. Having a grand ol' time at it too  :D  I figured the actual swap would be pretty straight forward. So i will most likely be getting the '91 the car is complete, and he kept good care of it (solid indicator, first and only owner, the car is mexico built, and it has no rust) lol.

So with the N/A am i gonna have a little underpowered engine? or is it gonna be able to have some fun whilst maintaining economy? lol

I look forward to diesel fun in the future.

Thanks alot Cyrus!

there is a huge power decrease when going to 1.6 n/a from gasser.  but the MPG increase more than makes up for it

Lots of help here. One of my friends (53willys) is doing a gas to diesel swap as we speak.
