Title: 020 4spd to 5spd trans question
Post by: silvertdi on December 29, 2007, 07:20:23 pm
I found a 93 cabriolet at the salvage yard today.  It appears to have a 5 speed trans.  I have a "GP" coded 4 speed in my 81 rabbit diesel. I reviewed the gear ratio charts on vortex and it appears that my 4 speed has the best gearing for mileage...even considering the 5 speeds.  I was hoping to put a 5 speed in with a lower ratio so the engine wouldn't be screaming when I'm doing 70 mph.  Is my interpretation of the data correct?  Thanks.

The 1993 Cabriolet should have a 9A trans: it's poorly suited to work with your 1.6 diesel. You could however, pull all the linkage parts in prep for a 5-speed swap. The Cabby parts will bolt right up to your 1981 Rabbit. You'll need the shifter box (metal piece that bolts to the body and hangs below the car), and the linkage rods at the end of the relay rod (you can reuse your relay rod).

Yes and no.  You can get different final drive ratios in 5 speed.  A 3.67 final drive would drop your revs and make 1st gear really problematic.  I had a 4A in and I now have a 7A.  The difference is better merges onto the freeway, a less abrupt downshift for hills on the freeway, and more difficulty convincing myself to shift to 5th in the city.  You may lose some mileage, and have a bit more delicate a transmission.

Consider the effect of a larger tire - and perhaps correcting the speedo, if you want to go down that route.
