Title: My first ever performance upgrade!
Post by: molgrips on October 28, 2008, 04:22:08 pm
I just installed a Rover 220D boost pin in my Passat.  It's pretty similar to the 1.6 pin I think that people have been using on the forum, but it's not eccentric - it's the same in all directions, if you know what I mean.

I set off down the road, the first time I got to open her up, not much happened then there was a slight clonk and wheeeeee!!!  Like hitting the turbo boost switch in Kitt from Night Rider...  well almost.  I dunno if the pin wasn't properly seated or what, but it didn't happen again.

Anyway, the engine was lovely.  Loads more power, especially at the higher end.  It actually makes a very interesting comparison with my only other diesel which was a 2003 Seat Ibiza with the 105bhp 1.9 PD engine...

That engine was of course much smoother and way more torquey - it felt like a rocket in lower gears at lower revs, but when you opened it up to overtake or something, you were reminded that it was just a normal car really.  In fact, you had to change up at about 3.5krpm to get the best out of it.

This older engine is actually totally different.  It takes longer to get going (the PD engine punched you in the guts as soon as you hit about 1.2krpm) but it just pulls and pulls up to the red line, getting stronger all the way.  Almost like a petrol engine in fact.

So for my next trick I think I'll tweak the fuel screw and turn up the boost, I reckon...

Well, any boost mod won't do alllll that much, in my opinion, by it's self.
do boost pin, max boost (wastegate blow off delete) and fuel all at once.
You'll see a difference there!
I think one mod only allows for the other mods and all together you get a nice thing.

Great, so more to come :)

oh plenty more butty!

my experience of diesels has been the opposite of yours. Modern PDs TDIs D4Ds etc all needed revving and lacked torque much like a petrol.

Whilst old skool IDI motors have loads of grunt even below boost time and when you tune them.....wow fun fun fun.

well having the boost pin shaped properly does give more fuel under boost which does give a fair bit of enhancement :D  us guys with our 1.6's don't really notice because of the cone shape, but guys with 1.9's don't really have any ramp to increase fueling under boost.  the difference is very noticeable

Ahhhh I see.
Well, i guess my main point was that one of these mods will be bit of a "hop" for sure, but all three would be more of a leap (more than three hops put together) :P

Intercool it before you start dicking with the fuel!

What shape passat is it? because a set up from a 1.6TD may fit yours!
heh, I hope is wasn't a K plate sort of shape because i just threw out a load of intercoolers and piping when I moved garages at the weekend!

Odd.  The PD engine always had instant massive surge of torque as long as you had the turbo spooled up.  If you really let the revs drop too low when pulling away (I'm talking below about 1.2) then there was a pause of a second or so and then wham!  You seriously took off at those kind of revs.  It really was a lovely car :)

Baxter - it's an L reg, I think it's one of the newest B4s.  And I'm definitely interested in an intercooler and preferably some tubing too, if you've got one going :)

More interested in economy than power, but I don't mind increasing the fueling to get more power when I need it.  The way I look at it, those mods just increase the max amount of fuel that can be delivered when you step on it, and shouldn't affect economy when you are just driving the same speed as normal - right?

I found this from an 05 2.0 TDI:

You can see that it's pretty much at max torque at 1750rpm...  Compare that to bert's graph from the other thread about TDI vs IDI:

you can pretty much correlate max torque with when the turbo reaches maximum boost.  TDI's have smaller VNT turbo's that spool MUCH quicker than the larger IDI turbo's.

Sorry I meant my car's one of the oldest B4s not newest - Baxter, if you're listening :)
