Is your engine apart?
If you can see the piston tops you can pretty much tell what you'll need.. .20 over can clean up just about any normal wear, if you've got mechanical failure damage evident on the walls, you may want to go for the .40 over... either way, let me know..

If you can see the piston tops, you should be able to read the number. It should be somthing like 76.49 if it's stock. If it's oversize it will be more like 76.99

I really dont think the wife would understand and I think sleeping in the back seat of the Jetta would be mighty cold at the moment.

Sorry to bother you since I probably will not be buying from you. I live in France, so the transport price will be expensive have seen on German eBay pistons for engine code
CS and JX (campmobile/bus), the price is right, 185 euro with sales tax, but my engine is a
SB; I do not know if they will fit, can you help me. I have written to the guy selling and he does not know!!

Is it a 1.6 or a 1.9? Is it turbo or NA?

The SB is a 1.6 turbo from a Passat from about 1989 (it is also used in the Golf Mk2.What I am afraid of is that the JX 1.6 TD do not use the oil jets, but if all vw 1.6 TD use oil jets then there should be no problem, but I cannot find engine code JX in Bentley nor in my other books

Excellent,
tip for you..
Tell the shop to leave the bores a bit on the loose side of the factory spec in the manual.. The motor will rev easier and won't feel tight..

What do you consider "a bit on the loose side" of the spec in the Manual?

Just wondering.

Section C # 4

Tight would be .02mm -- loose would be .05 .. If they'll cooperate, have them get closer to .05

Hi Myke, is it possible to supply 1 piston only in 77.01 mm?
I have a block that has one piston damaged, the rest is like new, only 5000 miles on a rebuild.

I know what the VW Spec is, I have the manual.  There seems to be many conflicting opinions about this spec from different Shops.  There are as many different opinions as there are different shops.

I'm  just looking for information based on actual fact and experience.

Thanks for responding with your information.

My experience is that if you go on the tight side, the engine will never rev well, it will feel tight. If you ahve them leave it on the loose side, it will rev freely, won't feel "not broken in" or like a cold motor all the time..
You really need to send the pistons to the shop, if they are good at what they do, chances are, they will get it right. This is not exact science... It's preference more than anything.

Title: Pistons
Post by: Doug on January 07, 2007, 09:32:00 pm
Mike, I have my 1.6 TD open now for valves and rings. It really needs to be bored but I need the car soon. I ran a ball hone through it tonight to prepare for new rings. The pistons are 76.48 mm. They have been in carb cleaner for three days and have cleaned up real nice. The old rings were basically oil crudded into the lands. There is about .005 inch wear on the bore which I realise is out of spec but this will get through the winter while I work on my Landcruiser. What oversize would you go with? Most shops always seem to want to take a fresh cut at things which usually means two oversizes. How do I order with Paypal? Haven't done it recently.

Doug
