Title: Dieselicious Turbocharger Upgrade/Rebuild Kits

Hi Volks,

I have to offer to our GTD board members a very complete, high quality turbo rebuild kit for the 1.6lTD KKK K24 turbo, including a 360 degree thrust bearing upgrade, new turbine housing bolts, wastegate mounting bolts, hard to find correctly fitting o-rings, journal bearings and piston ring seals, etc.

The above picture shows my Dieselicious 360 degree thrust bearing compared to the standard 270 degree thrust bearing found in the KKK turbocharger.  Benefits of the 360 degree thrust bearing upgrade are: better load carrying capability of the bearing resulting in slower wearing of the bearing and improved reliability (especially in high performance applications), and also less turbocharger oil flow requirement, leaving more oil pressure and flow to get to the other turbocharger and engine bearings and the piston cooling oil jets.

Pricing of my Dieselicious 1.6lTD KKK K24 turbocharger rebuild/upgrade kit is $80US plus $8 for shipping anywhere to the US or Canada.

This IS a job you can do yourself.  (And home mechanics that do will save lots of $!)  Step by step instructions will also be included, walking you through the step-by-step process on how to upgrade your turbo's thrust bearing and replace its journal bearings.

IM or e-mail me if you're interested.  I can get rebuild parts for pretty much any other turbo make or model as well.

I stock a Dieselicious turbocharger rebuild kit for VW Eco-Diesels (engine code: 1V) and Intercooled 1.6lTD European GTD motors (engine code: RA/SB), which is currently priced at $80.  The eco-diesel/GTD turbocharger rebuild kit includes a 360 degree thrust bearing.

A Dieselicious turbo upgrade/rebuild kit is also now available for a 1.6lTDs with Garrett turbochargers.  It includes a heavy-duty 270 degree thrust bearing upgrade and a Dieselicious gapless turbine-side sealing ring upgrade, and is priced at $90.  The following picture shows a comparison of the 1.6lTD Garrett heavy-duty Dieselicious thrust bearing upgrade versus an old worn out original:
The upgraded 1.6lTD Garrett Dieselicious thurst bearing features: improved oiling, a high strength special alloy steel (bending less under severe loading), and drastically reduced axial clearances (http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3252&start=3) compared to an old used original one.

Shipping cost for any Dieselicious turbo rebuild kit is a flat rate $8 to anywhere in North America.  Shipping to other continents is also available; inquire as to price.  Please send me an instant message or e-mail if you are interested.  Thanks!

Let me know when you are interested; I hope to be offering these parts for a while.  Look for other VW peformance parts coming from me in the near future as well! :)

Just remember that running a turbo until it stops working, IE: when the wheels hit the housings, will leave it needing much more than a rebuild kit but also possibly new shafts, wheels, housings, and other major parts, which are not always available and can get expensive!  It is a wise strategy to rebuild high-mileage or hard-used turbos preventatively.

That's why this community is better than ALL others, we actually have smart members doing things to help out.  I'd be willing to bet we have much cooler toys/products that our members are working on than any other message board!  :)

thanks for the advice jake. my turbo is spooling fine and shows no signs of needing a rebuild. i hope to rebuild it anyway as a precaution since i bought it used, along with rebuilding the spare one i have, over the winter... but i have a few other priorities to deal with before i'm at that stage. will keep you posted and looking forward to more dieselicious products from the fsp gtd guy.  :D

I now offer Dieselicious Turbocharger Rebuild Kits for the 1.9lTD, engine code: AAZ.  There are two varieties of 1.9lTD turbo rebuild kits: one for the Garrett turbo, another for the KKK turbo.  Both are priced at $80 US + $8 for shipping.

Jake, does the 1.9 AAZ KKK turbo kit come with the 360 degree thrust bearing, or is it just on the 1.6lTD KKK K24 turbo?  My engine has 330,000 kms (all Hwy) and I'm thinking of doing preventative maintenance.  Also, is it possible to pick up the kit?  I'm from Canada, but since I travel past Seattle occasionally, it would save on any duty & taxes.

All of my Dieselicious kits for KKK turbochargers come with 360 degree thrust bearings, which make for a very nice upgrade if your old KKK turbocharger has a 270 degree thrust bearing, as some do.

The stock KKK 270 degree thrust bearing is weak enough to break...
In the graphic case illustrated above (in this case a 1.6lTD KKK K24), the stock 270 degree thrust bearing broke into three pieces.  The lack of thrust control caused the compressor wheel to rub its housing and prevent the turbo from reliably generating boost pressure.  Besides causing damage to the compressor wheel (requires replacing the wheel to properly fix), the broken thrust bearing caused excessive oil to flow through the thrust bearing oil supply gallery and into the turbo's oil return cavity, some of which got pushed past the compressor oil seal and into the compressor housing and on into the combustion chambers.  Finally, running with a broken thrust bearing could cause oil starvation in other turbocharger and engine bearings.

A local pickup would work fine for me if you coordinated it in advance (send me an IM or e-mail if you're interested.)  However, shipping to Canada is not a problem, in fact I've already shipped kits out to 3 customers there and in each case they reported that the kits arrived promptly and with a minimum of hassle in getting through customs.

The contents of my kits vary depending on the application, but generally will include among any upgrade parts, those pieces that usually wear and/or should be replaced when you have your turbo apart (like thrust bearing and journal bearings, seals, o-rings, etc), plus installation instructions.  I IM'ed you the details for the Eco-Diesel kit.  Thanks!

I currently have Dieselicious 1.6lTD KKK kits and Ecodiesel turbo rebuild kits in stock ready to ship, and am accepting reservations on 1.9TD kits.

I've resolved an issue with my parts supplier and am now accepting special orders again, but the shipping fee for special orders will be increased to $10 and will not come with a guaranteed minimum shipping time.

For any special requests I don't usually carry, please provide me with your turbo model identification tag information to help me quote and deliver you the correct parts.  The ID tag is usually located on the compressor housing and looks like this:

Thanks for the turbo pic.  Long runners and M-TDI... awesome project, definitely worthy of a thread all of it's own! :)

Your turbo looks like it might have water cooling (I spy a banjo bolt fitting below the oil inlet...)  That means it may have come from an intercooled GTD RA/SB motor.  If you can, please send me a pic of your turbo identification tag (or the info from it.)  I would like to make sure that you get the right parts to upgrade and rebuild it.

PS - I sent an IM to you moments after I completed my post; hopefully that has arrived by now.

I'm going to make a topic on my eco m-tdi project. As soon as I made Up my mind what to do. (Choice between 1.8 8v gti inlet of 1.9 SDI inlet....)

RA/SB in Europe has got mostly a Liquid cooled Garret T2 or a KKK K14. But Never a K24 as far as I know.

Mine is just an regular K24 (but I'll make a pic of the tag tomorrow. )

Got your IM and replied.

Great deal!  Thank you!

I order a kkk k03 kit for the AAZ engine. I paid and he sent the kit the same day!!! I receive it a week after!!!(ship from USA to Canada/Quebec) in perfect condition. A good package well prepared and also in an anti-shock box. He also included an instruction sheet to help for the rebuild.

Can't wait to begin the rebuild!

EDIT: Rebuild was fun and... easy! The oil consumption droped dramatically (was 1L/1500km before and no oil yet for ~2000km)  Boost is now coming much more faster(no lag).

Thank you again!

Paul

I think it already has been posted in the forums before, so it's no secret; his new daughter was born, and his posting frequency seemed to have dropped around that time.

A baby during its 1st year takes tremendous amount of attention. They still need a lot of attention in the following years too. Maybe Jake's just being a good father, so he's temporarily putting his hobby aside. :)

well I found the reposted link for jakes rebuild instructions etc.. http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=13357&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=thread+size&start=15

and attempted to do my k24 tonight.. the kit from Alamo came with the wrong thrust washer!!! the one in the kit is like half the size and won't even reach the two dowel pins ......ARGH!!!! and no I have to wait till monday late to contact them to get this straightened out.
a tip for any one doing these rebuilds is to have lots of carb  clean, and you need pb blaster and oxy actylene torch to heat the area around any turbine bolts.. I didn't break any  but some were a real ***.. good thing the rebuild kits come with new bolts too.. and lapping teh waste gate with valve grinding compound worked great!!
again I couldn't have taken it apart with out oxy acty HEAT!!! and i sprayed the turbo down fro 3 days with pb blaster too..
Thanks,
Deo

I had that problem with a T3, I broke most of the turbine bolts, but eventually got them all out, but the turbine will not separate from the center section.  I can get it to turn a little if I beat on it with a hammer in the right direction but it isn't budging.  I was thinking of just dunking it in a bucket of used engine oil for a couple of weeks.  :P

I have the same problem as well, my thrust washers are too large for the shaft and the piece that fits into the compressor housing. Is there a way to measure the correct size of thrust washer to fit the impellar and that aluminum piece.   It almost looks like a split ring without the holes to open or compress the ring.  I'm going to give my local turbo shop a call and see what they have, but these guys were kinda stupid and told me my turbo was 30 thou out........  right......

I took the turbo to another shop and they balanced and straightened the shaft for me for 60$, and it was only out 2 thou.....
Title: Dieselicious Turbocharger Upgrade/Rebuild Kits
Post by: therabbittree on July 17, 2008, 10:03:17 pm
Huh?.. the thrust washer doesn't fit the shaft .. the only things on the shaft are the oil bearings, and the ring seals.. in the kit etc.. when you speak of rings with out  holes that sounds like the sealing rings .. they are like  piston rings.. you can spread them open with your snap ring pliers etc.....My kits problems were solved by receiving the correct kit .. some how the first one was send incorrectly.. any way .. If you need the compressor wheel nut torque, its 105 inch pounds if your nut  is right hand thread.. and use the red loctite.
Thanks

Well yes and no... ha.. the kit comes with the 270 degree stock thrust bearing ..I had the tech figure out were to get a 360 degree thrust upgrade..  not sure where it came from maybe a t3.. any way they added that to the kit too...If any one wants one of these and use Alamo.. talk to Jesse  tell them Deo sent you.. they just did mine and they can set you up... make sure you ask for the 360 thrust and the sintered metal wastegate gasket... as the correct second k24 kit I got, did not have it. But they were able to get it for me.... They helped out a ton..and I think i got the "bugs" out of their k24 stuff ha.. Im gonna use a kit  from them to redo my big holset for my dodge twins too so that should be cool too
Thanks
Deo

Is Jake (the OP) still tinkering with IDIs? I wonder why he left this site.

Yeah it was kinda sad to see him go, he was doing lots of interesting experimenting........it was lots more exciting than reading about alternator belts and stuff.

I don't know. I just Email him and got a reply.
He said he might have the kit, and to go to that site.

I think it is great! You are right his post where far more interesting then most.
