Title: [OT?] rust
Post by: prysm on May 02, 2006, 01:37:49 am
Do you guys have any rituals to prevent rust from developing on your rides?

My grandfather use to spray engine oil all over the under chassis of jeep, not sure if it really helps .

Uesed engine oil will work. But the best thing to do is keep it clean and free from exposed metal.

dont drive it if the roads in your area are salted.

I dont think they salt the roads in the Philipines, but they got lots of humidity and salt water around to do the job for them.

Keeping the metal sealed is the key, with paint, undercoat (roofing patch tar is cheaper!) or oil.  The oiling works, but needs to be repeated often and makes a heck of a mess under the car.  Anyone that works on their own car do the oiling route?

We have oil-based undercoating here in Canada. At present, the best is Corrosion Free (IMHO), though I have sprayed on the used motor oil (must be hot) and It worked great. The environmentalists, however, put a stop to that practice. Steer away from tar as it eventually hardens, cracks and then holds in the salt and water.

i found this stuf fmade by CRC its called corrosion shield, and they say it provides long term protection,i say its thin cosmoline in a spray can!! this stuff rocks,,ive been using it everywhere ive been fixing /welding on the rust monster,,i sprayed the inner rockers with it,,its sorta thin, give it 4 or 5 coats, let it dry in the meantime between coats, looks like whe yellow waxy crap that vw uses,,also maxima chain wax works about the same,il get a pic of the crc,and spray some out so you can see it,,its around 6 bucks a can,i highly recommend it!!!
