Post by: Smokey Eddy on August 02, 2008, 04:38:21 am
I've been reading posts about checking blow by on the valve cover and block??

Is the valve cover check this?
i apologize for the poor photo but it was the best i had

if you take the hose off that is that your blow by comming out? I thought it was just oil vapour...
im struggling feverishly to fix my starting woes while avoiding dropping cash i DONT have (ie. rebuild.)
and the check on the block? I have no clue. Can anyone explain? and how much is too much?
cheers,
Ed.

Yes either that or the oil filler cap. Oil vapours are blow by.
Basically if you can see it puffing a lot and thick you have problems.

Starting problems aren't always related to compression. Either bad timing, air leaks into the pump or a bad starter or starter circuit as well as glowplugs need to be checked as well

It's normal to have some oil in your intake on a vw diesel?

Thanks, cheers mates
I have a decent amount of oil in my intake. None has gone down into the air filter however. A decent amount as in if i shove a paper towel in there almost to the turbo it comes out about 75% solid black.
Also, does anyone know if you can change the rings by dropping the pistons out the oil pan. I've removed my pan before and was tempted to change the rings but i wasn't sure what kind of issues i'd run into so i didn't do it.

Pistons have to come out the top :(

However it's really not that big a deal to pull the head to do it.

I'm planning on a head removal here soon.
