Title: GTG London/SW Ontario
Post by: TDIMeister on May 24, 2004, 09:01:28 pm
Hey, guys,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I couldn't find a more appropriate location for it...

Back before the forum move I posted about a GTG in the London/SW Ontario area specifically for VW Diesel nuts.  At the time, the date and place were still tentative, but I am pleased to let you know that we are confirmed for June 19th in Dorchester, about 20 minutes east of London on the near side from T.O. and not far off the 401. Drive time should not be more than 1h15m from the 401 and Pearson Airport...

A little bio on the host of the GTG is in order.  Gerry (a.k.a. DIESEL DAZZLER) is the head tech at a SW Ontario VW dealership, and his experience in Diesels spans several decades on everything between big-rig trucks and VWs.  Some of his projects include an amazingly detailed 2/3 scale Kenworth powered by a VW 1.6 Diesel and his custom Caddy TDI that he drives practically daily.  This car, my friends, has an air suspension system and full drive-by-wire electronics swapped into an A1!  Needless to say, the man is a VW Diesel genius, and one of the nicest guys I know... which I why I believe some of the local guys from this board NEED to come to this GTG :)

Directions will be posted soon, but I'd like to get an idea as to who is coming as we're expecting a pretty good-sized turn-out, and we'll need to plan for food and making space for an influx of cars.

More info can be found here (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB18&Number=729446&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=all), but I will update this thread as developments arise on the TDIClub page.

P.S.: There are spots and ample tools and facilities to do some wrenching (by advance request, and first-come-first-served) or just chill out in wide-open space (bring a lawn chair).

Oh yeah, for those auto-crossers among us, on the day after this GTG, on Sunday June 20th, there will be an event hosted by WOSCA (Western Ontario Sports Car Association) in Woodstock, which is about half-an-hour from London/Dorchester.

I plan on participating, as is another TDI'er.  It would be cool to have a good-sized Diesel contingent present

Huge thanks, Marc!

On another note, will there be a GTG in the Montreal area in the near future?  I would like to hang out with you guys and take the opportunity to pick up my pump and show you some interesting cam stuff...

Is your buddy who machines the 12mm pumps set back-up?  I would still like to send up an A4 11mm pump to be converted to 12.

So far, I've gotten correspondences that the following will try to attend:
QuickTD
Dr. Diesel
BlackTieTD

Edit: plus a couple of others from the old site

Sorry for the long wait.  Been busy!

As requested, directions and map to Gerry's place:

- From Hwy. 401, take exit 199, Dorchester Road and head north in to town.

- There is a Tim Hortons on the left hand side about 1/2 km before the end of Dorchester Rd, which intersects with Hamilton Road.

- Turn left at Hamilton Road; and then a quick right on to Bridge St.

- At the end of Bridge St is a 3-way stop and a TD Canada Trust bank straight ahead. Turn left on to Catherine Street and make the first right on to Charles St. Follow around the bend; the number is 26 on the right hand side. Just look for all the VWs

We will have a pot luck / BBQ for lunch.  A little something to go around is not obligatory but would be appreciated.

More info here (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=729446&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&fpart=all&vc=1).

Details on the Auto-X in Woodstock on Sunday, June 20th (day after the GTG) can be found at www.wosca.com (site was down at last attempt).  There is another Auto-X this Sunday in the same location in Woodstock; as much as I'd like to make it, I have other plans.  But the 20th will be a definite!

Hey guys, hows it going? I just checked this board for the first time yesterday, and i'm glad I did. I live in London, and about a month ago I got my first car, a 1.6L NA jetta. I changed the timing belt and head gasket, but i'm sure talking with the pro's will help me out a lot! What time is everybody going to show up? I think I might swap my transmission tonight, so hopefully i'll be able to make it tomorrow. I also have to be in tornonto by 8:00pm tomorrow, so i'll just be able to stop by for a little bit

This'll be my first get together, so be nice!

Thanks,

Will.

mark, someone else was taking pictures, hopefully they will post on TDI club. (you can call me Lanny, i'd prefer that   , Len is close though)

blades... i'd say its somewhere between fast and very fast. still can't believe his ass didn't get pulled over by the looming OPP as we came down the on ramp after the GTG quite above speed, his red rocket blasting like a friggin locomotive (a reference to both smoke and speed)

It's very fast.

And Dr. Diesel is, in fact, the devil...

Just occured to me I didn't give any rides. Next time maybe... I ended up staying quite late, got recruited to fab up a boost pipe on the SDI intake manifold project. We got it on and running, with a few loose ends. Nothing worse than expected on a job of that magnitude...

Yes other than the sunburn it was great , like others I only realized that I also should have asked for a ride in the IDI machines . I would be neat if sometime that all of those cars could possibly race eachother or somthing(1/4 mile) ,you know just to see whats going on.Its nice to see and hear them but I'd lover to see them go :) .

I'm glad to have met most if not all of you guys from this board at the GTG last Saturday.  Sorry that I was so pre-occupied working on my car -- usually I delegate other people to do the work, leaving me with a lot of time to socialise  :D    FWIW it was great to chat -- if only briefly -- with Lanny and Bryson.  I'm sure we'll meet in the auto-X circuit this summer, and for those going to Waterfest, hope we can hang out and spread some Diesel love there

Sorry if I were not formally introduced to others from this board who were also there...

Gerry remarked to me what a good time he had hosting the GTG and the great people who came out.  I would love to see more of these Diesel-specific meets as we seem to draw a different (more mature) crowd than some in the general VW and gasser enthusiast populace.

FYI, there are TDI GTGs planned almost on a monthly basis, and by all means you non-TDI-Dieselers are certainly most welcome to join.  I will try to post events of note here as they show up on TDIClub, but also keep your eyes peeled on the Events/GTGs section in that forum; like I said, there are meets throughout in your region almost on a monthly basis, even through the dead of winter in southern Ontario, for example.  Sorry if you IDI guys have a hard time with that

RedRotors got introduced to a pretty decent steak dinner on Friday night and enough reading of car stuff to furnish the Library of Congress.  :P

Marc, I guess you can "un-sticky" this and raise the anchor to let this thread drift into the sea of obscurity of time...

Hey, that was one of the best days I've had in ages! The drive out was fun,    so was being told that my engine sucked because it had black oil and a lousy injection pump.      What did you think of that whole spiel, Andy? Have you played with your LDA yet?
Marc, it was great finally meeting you. Next time, hopefully it's in your TDI-M A2!
Bruce, great to meet you too. Nice IC install.
Lanny, I was low on fuel, and had to 'economise' on the way home. I could tell you were chomping on the bit to up the ante a little. I haven't seen so many OPP's in my life! What's with that? They must all be afraid of the driving populus in general in toronto area, where they're most needed.
Dave, how'd that manifold install turn out? Was it worth it? Big power gains? That's a nice Passat you've got there.
Keep us posted for any further GTG's, especially any closer to TO. hehe

That mad scientist oil inspector guy was great , I loved the way he rolled his eyes at your oil sample  :P ,looks likes you need a turbo ya thats it, my dad and I couldn't stop laughing on the way back. BTW  the substance on the rear of my car was due to a leaking dipstick tube, I'll soon be messing around with the LDA is there a desired spring tension to have like say and what boost pressure would it be ideal for the pin to start traveling , I'm making a set up aneroid cover to apply pressure , It will have a small hole in the top for a small pin to feel the LDA's travel.

Keep your schedule open for a big GTG in the Niagara region, tentatively for sometime in August.  This will be another blockbuster.  And bring/use sunscreen next time.  8)
