Hi,
I'm hoping an expert on here might be able to help me with my problem.
I have a 1985 1.6D NA Van and can't get her to run tidy.
To get her to start I have to crank the engine for a long time, then to get her to idle I have to keep my foot on the accelerator for a long amount of time. Then even when she's idling she sounds quite rough with a lot of white smoke. Then if I hit the accelerator hard and let go it will stall.
I have good compression on all cylinders and have performed a leak down test which showed no issues.
I'm guessing injectors or pump but how would I diagnose?

Is the timing set properly??
Hi, I set it at 85 mm.

If you're lucky it's just lack of fuel. Put clear fuel line into and out of the pump, and report back.

You might put the timing up to 92 mm and see if that helps. With the age that pump might be a bit worn and engine could use the advance of a few mm's.
Actually it sounds like you need to do a retime, idle adjust and perhaps a fuel adjustment as well.
Basic Tune is all.

I had a 1.5 that was running awful, took ORCoaster’s advice and gave the timing a good bump. It ran better than my 1.6! My pump was slightly modified, but the idea stands that these little diesels are very sensitive to timing.

180° out of time?

180° out of time?
Sorted, thanks! Injector pump was 180 out. I should have added this was after having the engine out for major surgery.
Just need a bit of fine tuning now I think since there is a slight knock.
