Title: 1.6 td any years better then others?

so i want to swap a TD into my N/A diesel coupe.. and i am curious any years better then others to look at for the 1.6 td? thanks

i don't believe the engine code has much to do with what turbo it has, but i could be wrong.  the only real differences are the which turbo and whether its solid lifter or hydro lifter.

Probably the last years of production would be the most reliable ie 91-92. The lowest mileage is good too, just so everything is not worn out. You can re-machine everything of course but it gets pricy. I find it hard to beat the stock assembly from the factory, it takes a very good diesel specialist machine shop to duplicate the reliability of a factory engine. Speaking as one who has blown up my share of engines and built quite a few. Cheers Dan

I'm afraid of 92 TDs in the 200-300k range because I've heard that they have bad piston rings. I've taken 2 apart to confirm this. It's just a phobia though and most are probably fine
