Title: Harmonic balancer necessary? reposition alternator
Post by: BGA on March 27, 2017, 04:42:48 am
I am building a mTDI to go into a rwd Volvo.
AHU motor. For the aux equippment I intended to use AFN VP bracket, but the fourth hole doesnt fit as discussed in http://vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php/topic,9599.0.html). What was result of discussion? Can be used or not?

Id like to have the alternator on RH side. With two V-belt pulleys on crankshaft this is possible but then I dont have any harmonic damper. This is my main worry. What risk I take?

I have two harmonic dampers. One, the heaviest is made for two belts and seems to have better damping as it has a steel ring pressed in between two rubber rings. The other only has rubber ring between hub and "belt pulley"

What is absolut best way to go, you think.

Heavy harmonic CS pulley, alternator on left side (pump side) belt driving WP. Belt tensioned by alternator as in old time with V-belts. I have seen this in another thread. Company selling the parts BRB? and signature INA. It looks very clean and simple.
PS pump or AC compressor will not be used.

I'd use the AHU crank pulley, AHU serp bracket, AHU alt, serp water pump pulley and run a single non-A/C serp belt.

Why not use the stock TDI serp setup that came with this motor?

ABA water pump pulley, stock balancer, remove PS pump, remove v-belt pulley, super clean. The serpentine belt does the alternator and the water pump, no v-belt at all.

libbydiesel, srgtlord: My AHU was stripped down when I bought it, so I dont have all parts and doesnt no what it looked like and dont knew from what car it came.

vanbcguy: Is this the ABA water pump pulley?

I found this alternator bracket on a Euro Volkswagen Golf 3 1,8/ABS -1994. Can i use it and use alt. to tighten serp belt? Maybe a problem to find a freewheeling alt to fit?

Yes, that is the serp water pump pulley.  Get the AHU serp bracket and alt (if the alt you have does not fit) and you will be all set.  The AHU bracket includes the tensioner arm and pulley for the serp belt.

It was hard to read p/n but I read it to 028 105 243Q
MFD showes both 98 and 99 (strange with two years).
Other marks: 350-400 Hz, 2/2 PYD.

Thank you for the part number thats a much better option at $140 than a modified fluidamper for $500 :)

Find and ABF alternator and you should be all set

I now have the alternator bracket 028 903 143 AD (5$).
Canīt find a freewheeling alt pulley for the alternator:
028 903 025P, Bosch 0 123 320 006
Have surched IKA but canīt find it.

Maybe alt is too old?
