So I have tried to search here and on Vortex for the answer unsuccessfully so far.
I am swapping a 5 spd into my Rabbit when I put the 1.6td in hopefully in the next few weeks.
I know I need the 5 speed shift linkage/rods and selector ball. I'm hoping to obtain these and new bushings with a short shift kit.
I have also been told I need the shift box? From a 5 spd as well, is this a must? Can this be ordered aftermarket? Is there anything else I am missing?
Thanks in advance for any help

You don't need the shift box.
You need to extend the shift selector lever the appropriate distance.

Excellent, thank you

I also had to spend a good amount of time adjusting the shifter mount to where I could reliably get all the gears

I did not need to adjust the shifter mount, but I did need to adjust the orientation of the selector lever on the end of the linkage rod.

Adjusting the end of the selector lever seems to be real tricky. Not a lot of wiggle room from say 1st to 3rd positions. My problem was the R to 1st location. Every time I put it in first I had to play the clutch at the light to be sure I was going to go forward when the light changed.
Even re-positioning the engine after new mounts seemed to make adjustment necessary.

I had a beast of a time getting all the gears until I realized that the fastener on the selector lever was hitting and not letting me adjust it far enough. Once I sorted that out it seemed fairly easy to get the correct adjustment. When I cut/welded the 4-speed lever I made it slightly longer than the 5-speed lever which made it easier to get all of the positions. I also replaced all of the linkage rods and bushings at the same time so everything is in good shape without extra slop.
