Title: Wants to see pics of your diesel in all its beauty!
Post by: RAMMSTEIN on July 04, 2004, 12:00:26 am
I would like you guys to post pictures of your diesels.

I'll probably need a 2nd car next year and would like to go with MK1 or MK2 diesels (the Passat variant TDI I have will be my main vehicule, but I have projects for her, so she might spend some time on the blocks).

I can't decide between A1 and A2...

It would be a Golf/Rabbit as I have no affections for sedans... :?

Were they any Jetta variant (station wagon) for the the A1/A2?

Share the pictures of your beloved diesel!  :D

Here's a pic of my car (http://pics.tdiclub.com/data/500/18482my_car_3.jpg). It started life as a 1.6 NA diesel then got a 1.8T now it's getting a TDI.

Do Rabbit have a rear wiper on their hatch? :?:
Title: Wants to see pics of your diesel in all its beauty!
Post by: BlackTieTD on July 05, 2004, 11:22:28 am
some rabbits do have a wiper, some dont. the wiper hatches are usually more common than the non-wiper hatches... i couldn't find a non-wiper hatch when i was looking for a replacement, so i will just have the holes filled. i dislike rear wipers.

my parents got back from their trip last night, so i can finally get my pics off their digital camera and post some up for you guys (i really need my own digi cam). here's a couple from december when i bought the car:

..and there are some more pics in this (http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=34) post.

I thought only the 4 doors version came with the 1.6TD?

If I ever buy one, we'll swap hatch!

mine came from the factory a 1.6l diesel, no turbo. when i bought the car it had a 1.5l diesel in it. the head gasket blew and instead of fixing it and staying with that engine, i decided that was a good opportunity to upgrade to the 1.6l TD, so i did.  :)

saw a 1984 jetta turbo diesel yesterday and talked with the fellow a while... was a 4-door and the engine had been replaced with a naturally aspirated 1.6  :? but zero rust, original paint  :)

on a completely unrelated topic, i was at a vw show yesterday (john's bug shop puts it on every year) and i scored a 1982 rabbit owners manual, maintenance schedule, etc etc, still in the plastic  :D

http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/gallery/mk1gallery.html

quite modded but you get the idea, round headlamps, rear lamps shorter etc. I love the square US lights!

Here the GTDs are very rear especially A1s, My friend has an A2 GTD and I love it but hes into gassers (has a G60 and VR6) and uses it for college and thinks its just normal diesel! Its a 1.9 GTD aswell so much more desiarable than my 1.9TD, I love the IC setup on them aswell!

Click my sig to see my GTD, powered by a 1588cc intercooled SB engine, 80bhp 155Nm as it left Wolfsburg, I've drilled the airbox, I'm going to change to a FMIC, block the BOV, and up the boost from 0.7 to 1.1 BAR and adjust the fuelling to suit.

That's a nice diesel you got there GTD.

Where did you get the center console?

6 gauges in all...mmmm...never seen that before.

What kind of wheels are these?

Very nice, we didn't get those on this side of the pond.

Thanks, its in need of a respray, I get it done in the spring, I'll do the prep work, and I know some lads who are sprayers so I'll get a "blow-over" for mates rates.

The center console was made by Votex, I dont know if you guys accross the pond will of heard of them, but they make the genuine dealer  accessories for VAG (VW Audi), the Votex center console is quite rare and was an option, so you basically have two extra din slots.

There are two verions of the votex console, the early 1 piece which was a whole center console, I've only ever seen two of these, on in a very old book (Improve and modify your Golf and Jetta by Haynes which has odd things in it like the BBS and Kamei bodykits) and one on ebay which was NOS in original VAG parts box.
The later version (which I have) is a new front section, you have to cut the front off your console and the new one scews in from the inside so no screws are visable.

There is a company making copys of them but Ive been warned they use a poor grade of plastic and the screws arnt hidden like on the genuine center console but there address is www.swgmotorsport.com its in the mk2 section.

Three guages are the standard Audi coupe ones, theres also a tim 1 BAR turbo guage, which I will replace with a VDO 3bar guage when I have some spare cash! as I plan to up the boost from the stock KKK turbo to 1.1 BAR, the otherguage is a VDO -60A+ Ammeter, and I have a BBS RA centercap as a blank for the othe hole, whic I plan to replace with a VOD EGT guage (if they make one, or I can find one)

The wheels are 15x7J ATS Cups, I got them second hand off ebay, I plan to mirror polish them once spring is here, there also avalable in 8J and I think 9J .

I also have a set of 15x7J OZ Turbo split rims that I need to mirror polish, If I can get the 2 10point sockets to split them, last time I saw the tools on Ebay.de (German Ebay) they cost over £100, I'd get a wider outer rim, but I'd have to cut the arches like on a G60, did you get G60's (1.8 G-Lader supercharged 8V & 16V engines) over there, they had different wings with a bit cut out which is hidden by the plastic arch trims.

Yeah, it's ugly, but the last two owners paid less than $100 for it, so it hasn't been getting much cosmetic attention ;)

mods: 15x7J alloys, TD swap, GTD suspension, grille, badges, seats.

I did put in new tierod ends a few weeks ago and the engine is in amazingly good shape, as is the turbo.

First pump tweaks done today, more to come...

Thanks, let's say the camera (phone, actually) was kind to it :) There's a dent just behind the drivers door and a few small rust spots, faded paint etc. The ATS are very nice to have, although corroded. Not easy to repaint either, in two colors. Mind you, I DID wash the car just a week before taking these pictures, although it may not look like it ;)

Anyway, the interior is decent, and the engine bay is pretty clean too. Which is nice because I like spending time there :P

Here are some pictures I took tonight, it's about -20C right now.

aCk, it's Tornado Red.  It never occured to me that I'd ever own a red car but here it is in all it's flaming glory...  :o

The Road Safety license plates sounded like a good idea until my brother backed into the front one and squashed it.  Now it's kinda embarrassing...

I always try to back into my parking spots.

One piece of fender trim is missing and look at how much salt is growing on the back bumper because of it!  I took it off to hack out the only rusty section of the car but now there's nothing to reattach it to.

See that chunk of snow in the front wheel?  It keeps coming back!  I'm fed up with the shaking it creates so I have plain steel wheels on order.

HAH!  A cupholder. :)  It falls off once in a while but it's still the best feature of the car.  I've got the factory 6 speaker system.  The previous 3 radios were stolen from the car but they never took the speakers so they are worn out. :(

My brothers sunroof, it's an 89 Golf

Yeah, he's got the dorky bumpers on his car and it didn't come with a passenger mirror from the factory.  We were rebuilding his floors when this picture was taken.

Here we are with 13" Canadian Tire wheels and winter 155s.  Very nice. :)  The headlight covers on the other hand are a love/hate relationship.  When I bought the car it had a set that were all cracked and falling apart from being hit with rocks.  The problem is that they are far away from the headlights so they fill up with snow in between.  Not while driving, but when parked.  Sometimes I have to remove them to get the snow out which makes them a bit laborious.

Title: New to the GTD forums.. pictures of my diesels.
Post by: Vhunter on January 06, 2005, 10:49:27 pm
Hello everyone,

I am new to the GTD forums, and thought I would post a picture of a few of my diesels to introduce myself.  I live about 45 miles outside of Omaha, NE.

In front is a '99 Jetta TDI, and in back is an '03 Dodge 2500 CTD 6-speed 4x4.
The Dodge is mostly stock, while the TDI has a few mod's to it.  G-60/vr-6 flywheel/clutch, bigger injectors, RC 3.1 chip, steel skid plate, larger oil cooler, E-code headlights, 2.5" cat-back stainless exhaust with Borla muffler.

I also have an old '81 rabbit diesel that is in very bad shape, mostly for parts. Not driveable.   I hope to pick up another '81 rabbit in much better shape next week if the weather permits the trip, and will try to get it into tip top shape. Info gained on these forums will be a big help in that!

I used to have an old '87 MB 300SDL, which I ended up tradeing off for a small gasser car, which I don't want to talk about.

Heres a picture of an early 300SDl,  The SDL was a little longer, with most of the space in the rear seat area, and a bigger rear door than the 300SD.

I am looking forward to lots of diesel discussion and info about the VW diesel on these forums !

This looks like a nice topic to introduce me and my vw's to you.

I'm from The Netherlands and an Automotive engineer for DaimlerChrysler in Stuttgart Germany.

My love for VW and their diesel engines is very big. I've owned a lot Volkswagen diesels.
At the moment there are 3 cars that are ok for daily use. And a Rabbit and Jetta1 for parts.

Al the work and modifications on the car I do myself.

A 1990 Caddy with 1.6 NA Diesel it's my RAT-Caddy that brings me to work and back. I also use him for picking up parts and stuff.

A 1992 Jetta 2 with 1.3i engine. This is the family car on his winter ires at the moment. For the summer there are Porsche 928 16" wheels on it. Still a lot of work planned.

But first my favorite..... car has to be ready.

A 1982 Jetta 1 with original a 1.3 carb engine soon to be replaced by a prepared 1.6 GTD engine with 4T gearbox with quaife dif and gears.
For this car I planned to use for the summer old VW Beetle wheels with a chrome hubcap without logo... Nice Oldschool... Imperial on the roof... enz..

I'll keep you updated on my modifications.

Just a couple things, for starters, nice 82!  To the best of my knowledge, the 1.3 engine never got sold on this side of the ocean. My soon to be parked 84 2 door Jetta has it's original engine, a 1.7l gas  (366,000 km and counting) with injection. Newest car I've dealt with with a carb, 1976 rabbit. 77 was injected here.  Last thing, we didn't get the big headlight on your 82 either. My 84 and 84 parts car both have 4 sqaure headlights.

For the old jetta I got a lot of plans, but first the technical part of the car.

Here in the Netherlands there aren't that much old cars because we use salt on the roads if it's freezing and living close to the sea doesn't make the bodywork better.

There was a 1.1 engine sold in the rabbit and jetta1 here in Europe. The 1300 has engine code GF with 60 Hp.

The 1.7 liter engine has never been in a european car. Do you know the engine code so that 1 can check if we got a similar engine here.

Al the old jetta's has got the big headlights and our rabits has got round lights. The small headlights you talk about are very rare here. They are only to be found on imported Rabbits and Caddies.

A trailer hitch on the 1.3 eh?  Interesting...what could you possibly tow that wouldn't fit inside the trunk? Popcorn?  The mileage must be pretty good, how many litres per 100 km did the 1.1 rabbit get?  A new Golf TDI in Canada gets 4.6 on the highway.  Mine is getting 6.5 overall which is better than most new cars around here.

The following engines are 1781CC

GX 85HP
MZ 90HP
HT 100HP
RD 102HP
RV 100HP
PF 105HP
PL 123HP

From looking at the sticker in the trunk, my 84 has a tranny code of 7A and the engine code is EN (I think). I know the Chilton's manual tells me th eengine is 74 HP.  1.6l Diesel NA is 52 HP and 1.6 TD is 68HP. (All 1984). My wife's 1987 Fox says 1.8L 88Hp. (Gas)And the headlights? My car is German built, not US. The Fox, however is Brazilian.

The EN engine is the 1.7L 8v. (It's got a nice forged crank)
The 1988 fox your wife has is a JN engine. It's a 8.5:1 CIS engine.

Jetta PACIFIC !!!!! I've seen one a few street from my place. I've never head of another here.

I just finished putting an all new suspension and all new front end parts.  The car handles amazingly well now.  It's very tight, and corners that used to be a big deal don't exist any more!

Here's my Rabbit with the new suspension and my Golf TDI.  I like that the Rabbit doesn't look like it's trying to take off in the front any more.  :D

Very cool, Matti!  8)

Is your car an Audi 80, like your userid? It looks like a VW Quantum, which is same car as the Audi 4000 in Europe.

Cheers!

I am going to try a Garret VNT20 from Audi 2,5 V6 TDI. 8)
It is `85 Audi 80 CC TD. I think it is same as 4000 in USA.

Yes, it makes sense that it's what we call an Audi 4000. My Quantum is the same car, but with a VW marque.

I have heard that the VNT20 is too large even for a really hot 1.9TDI, so I think you may have some problems with it on a 1.6TD.

But I will wait to hear from you how well it works! :D

Water necks, intake and all silver and black parts are powder coated. Head is just polished a bit. The block and oilpan is painted to match body color.
I am going to drop it in tomorrow. I still have to make new exhaust pipe, intercooler tubing, turbo oil lines etc... Hopefully I get it running for next weekend. I don`t have the VNT yet, going to use the stock Garret for break-in driving.

Got the engine in and running. Still has the old turbo but I got the VNT last friday.
I dont think that VNT20 is too big for 1,6. I know one mk2 Jetta which has one (150+ hp dynoed)

nice Audi80!  How'd you make the boost tube to throttle mount piece - did you use a gutted throttle valve or some other part as a starting point, or did you fabricate it from scratch?

PS - that is a monster of an intercooler!  :P  Very clean install!

items replaced:  new shift linkages, complete suspension (inc bushings, stress bars upper and lower), steering components, all wheel bearings, tranny seals, 210mm clutch, timing and water pump belts, brake pads, glow plugs

repaired door handles, dash lights and other problems, climate controls inc heater core and installed a secondary core (preheat), cleaned out entire fuel system and injectors, removed a/c system - relocated alternator, added in a voltmeter/boost guage/oil pressure guages and installed a stereo system, just to name a few.

it has 221k on the odometer, gets about 40mpg average, runs great and starts even in the cold of northern Wisconsin winters.

let me know what it is worth considering the condition. Curious as to the opinions.

To get back to this thread I started last year, I think that I decided which model I'll get: a Jetta 1 TD.

She's not mine yet, she's a 4 doors, but....brown.... :?

Not crazy about the color, very "old school" I guess...

Worst part is that the owner (second owner, had the car for 15 years), repainted it, brown...

Should get her later this summer, will post pics for sure.

Not a lot of those early Jetta around, ain't it?

We got a little problem on price finally...I thought it was 1500, but he asks 4500$...which I don't think its worth...so back with the passat as only vehicule. :D

Is it possible that the pedals on A1's are crooked?

Diesel pedal was ok, but the brake and clutch were further down towards the floor.

I had trouble with the old rod tranny vs my cables in the passat.

I think I'll go with an A2 finally, I just can't drive standard without a tach, drives me crazy! :|

A little update: I finally went for an engine instead of a car.

I bought RR blue engine along with tranny, stock turbo, intake, exhaust and intake manifold from another member.

I went to TDIfest in Wisconsin and a guy I know gave me: 1 AAZ block, 1 TDI block (don't know from what though), a 3000 miles old drive shaft (long one from a B4 TDI) and a brand new 22mm master cylinder.

As for the body that all this stuff will go into, I'll go with the lightest VW made since 1975.

I'll let you guys guess what it is.

Hint: it's watercooled and not a dune buggy...

For now, no more money, so the body will wait.

My new to me 84 jetta diesel. Picked it up the other day for 500 bucks. I didn't want to spend that much but did anyway. It needs alot of work but will be a fun winter project. The glow plug relay is bad and the glow plugs wouldn't come on, so to start I had to connect the jumper cable directly to the plug. It hadn't run in 2 years and after cranking for awile and spraying some wd-40 in the intake it started up. I drove it home 30miles with no plates and one tail light at night.

It needs some door trim, and some bigger wheels the 13's dont do well on it.

A new coat of shiny paint, 16inch wheels and maybe some window tint.

Ya, I know no turbo the thing is nut less compared to my old 91 eco. But it is a race car compared to my friends 91 non turbo, I cant figure that one out. Hopefully I'll have a trubo and intercooler on it this spring.

A little update guys: I'm saving up for a scirocco mk1...

If not available, I'll go with a german rabbit or mk1 jetta (like the nice one mainer bought).

If none of these choices are available, then Jetta mk2 it will be. :D

Hey Mathdiesel, nice to see you here! Tu viens de 3R, right?

hold out for one of these :D

i was in the hunt for a mkI rocco a few months back. they are out there, but getting rarer by the day. they seem to have gone through a renewed interest lately (around ontario anyway) so jump on 'the one' quick if you find it!

i know of a few german rabbits for sale but all are more rusty than i would care to deal with.

i have a mkI jetta i may part with under the right terms. '84 GLI coupe with very nice body.

let me know if you'd like to discuss any of that :)

From South Carolina (upstate) - I'm absolutely thrilled with it.
I had a bug ~15 years ago, pulled the engine with a swing set and rebuilt it in a shed.  Learned a lot.  Hoping to learn a lot on this one too - first diesel - etc...  Not even sure how to check the oil yet!  First things on my agenda are to get a Bently book, change the timing belt and tensioner pully (runs great, but unknown age/mileage on the current one), and send off a working pull injection pump (just won 1 on ebay) for a Giles rebuild.  Was planning to pull the motor to put in a sidekick, but its too much fun to drive so keeping car as is.   Eventually want to do the WVO thing but need to get familiar with it for a couple of years first.  Will probably just lurk around here / read / and absorb for a while.

I just can't believe I'm getting 45MPG for a $650 car.  And its fun to drive!

I sold the A1 diesel. Paid 500 for it, parked it in the yard for 2 months than sold it for 1200. I didn't want to see it go, but knew i would find another. Which I did. Its a 1989 with diesel trim, says diesel on the back and on the dash. The odometer says 650k, but I think somthing shorted out and it went crazy. I dont have great pics, but they are pics.

So far I have had to put a new heater core in it(what fun that was), block heater, coolant return line from the heater core to the bottom of the block. It needs a new radiator, and struts. For some reason the AC works, cant belive it but it blows cold air.

Jake,

I thought I'd lost touch with you forever.  ;)  I'm glad to have stumbled across this site.  Now I can put your link back on my site's page (BTW, link to my site has changed to StealthTDI.com (http://www.StealthTDI.com/)... your site features an OLD link).  We'll have to talk autocross again.  I'm now in FSP due to the boost rule change.

Anyway, I couldn't find a Welcome Area or another way to say HELLO and introduce myself and my car.  So here I am.  :)  It's not an IDI; nor is it an A1/A2.  But it has A2 wheels: ;)

The car has 202,000-miles on it and climbing every day.  I run it like a dawg and work it like a slave:

Here's an 8-MB VIDEO (http://www.stealthtdi.com/20051120-StealthJoyFund.wmv) (right-click, save-as) of the car autocrossing last year for those interested.

Yes, I love my car!  I'm considering a turbo upgrade... ongoing research.  But, for now, I'm going to stick with the stock turbo to maintain my SCCA-FSP eligibility.

Take Care,

Scott

Hi,

I like the Amsoil well enough.  I'm not a loyal fan.  I get it at cost from Lube-Direct.  Otherwise, I'd likely use the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV (or whatever it's called).  I've used Amsoil's 15W40 and 10W40, both of which run a little quieter than Delvac 1 5W40.  I'm currently using their "European Car" formula in 5W40.  It seems to do well enough.

I tried their Series 3000 tranmission oil (??? blue fluid) and was unimpressed.  I think it was actually worse than the stock stuff with 100,000-miles on it.  I switched to Redline MTL about 50,000-miles ago.  WOW!  Big difference!  I'm hooked.

In short, Amsoil's good in the engine, I prefer Redline in the tranny.

Take Care,

Scott

Post by: Rat407 on May 01, 2006, 06:39:07 am
That's interesting on the gear oil. It explains why Amsoil came out with there MTG manual transmission gear oil. A 75w-90 GL-4 only rated oil.  The series 2K gear oil was only made for differentials and not transmissions. They must have gotten a ton of complaints so they developed the MTG line of oil.  That is going into my transmission next. I currently have Redline in it now and it still is notchy, at least to me it seems that way, not as smooth as it could be.

I haven't tried the engine oil yet. I just now have 13k on the engine and wanted to make sure it was well broken in before I switched over to synthetic.

Getting Amsoil at cost is great.

Where do you run at?  I would like to do that but with the family and being in the Air Force, my spare time is limited.

Thanks for the info.

Eh Scott, wassup?

You've got nice Castelets, 14 inches right (since you say it's from an A2)?

I've got yet another car: 1992 Jetta swapped with a 1985 1.6 NA.

As a beater, it's alright.

I think I've got the ACH transmission, at 100 kph, it revs 3300 rpm... :?

I think I'll change the fifth gear eventually.

No pictures, so far, maybe in 2 weeks, I'm moving to a new place with internet (finally! :D ).

mines not factory td :^(, but it's still fun, and it's a cy engine code so it's the right code for a mk1, although it's out of a mk2. the only difference is the down pipe, the intake box and hose, and the one water passage, no biggie.

My 85 Coupe. Nothing fancy but has never been painted. 710,000 kms and 5 collisions with deer so far. This pic was taken the day after a deer collision, note the missing mirror and bent antenna. Only paid $400 for it 10 years ago. Most reliable car I've ever owned (just had it on a 1000 km road trip yesterday). Hopefully getting it painted in the next couple months though.

the two tone doesnt look so good at first.. but it really grew on me.

i'm thinking of sanding it down a bit and doing a full respray in either all white... or going with the exact same theme but maybe a pinstripe where the red and black meet. i'd  have to photoshop it to see how it would look

Conventional but it's not the original engine. I took the original out at 470,000 kms because it was running on and I already had a spare. Found stuck rings on #3 piston. Hope to rebuild it some day.

1988 1.6td

It is currently having its radiator and oil cooler replaced as they were both shot to pieces.

Have already bought some lowered suspension and some 7 1/2x 13 mattig steel wheels from German ebay.

Once I have used it for a couple of months I will be getting the fuel and boost sorted out.

I thought I'd post up some pics of mine, not that recent I'm afraid.

The back (which I still haven't got the new panel for)

The front (the side repeaters are now smoked)

The engine bay.  Still this tatty, but getting there.  Needs the rocker cover gasket sorting, and the oil cooler replacing, the glow plugs changing.... The list goes one.
Still, I upgraded the front brakes to vented disks today, it now has a full GTI interior, and more planned....
There are some beautiful cars in this thread, I really liking the Caddys.  Keep 'em coming!
Cheers,
Tom[/img]

I have the same mags on my A2 Jetta beater (1.6D).

What size brakes did you put on?

9.4" or you upgraded for bigger?

I'm going to 10.1" (passat brakes here) with 230 mm drums in the rear. :D

Plus a master cylinder from a VR6 B3 passat (with abs, that's going to be fun), it should brake well. :D

RAMMSTEIN I'm afraid to say that upgrading the calipers and carriers seemed a little too much like hard work, so I just changed the disks and pads to those from a GTI.  There's not really a noticable difference yet, but the pads are still bedding in, and I haven't tested them under sustained braking yet  :D.  Your setup sounds good, that's going to halt on a sixpence!
Putting in a rear axle from a GTI may also be on the list later, depending on what the scrappy thows up...
bri957cc, thank you.  I have to say that it took me an age to track down a reasonable one.  I could either find one that had been thashed and was cheap, or one that was near perfect (and too expensive).  I went for a tatty one that needed work but was mechanically sound in the end.  The plan is to get it restored, and then think about engine modifications...
Cheers,
Tom

Since the last time I posted pictures it has gotten a large duckbill, euro bumpers, smoked corners, and smoked turns in the euro bumps, along with new wheels which I painted black and polished the lips.

Tuning still to come.  My son keeps trying to talk me into it since I have an intercooler ready to go on someday.

Here are some pics of my MK2 (A2) GTD

Its the rare Montana Green (55 made), late 1991. Its been mildly modded by the previous few owners, but just cosmetics.

130,000 miles
1.6TD (SB engine code)
50mm (ish) drop kit
15" G60 Steels
Dealer fitted optional Big Bumpers

The previous owner fitted a complete G60 Syncro interior along with electric rear windows. Which is very firm still!

Here are a few pics of the car when i picked it up:

It's coming off the road in January for a load of work to be done on it :- new oil cooler and system flush, oil filter, fuel filter, new starter, new alternator, performance air filter with drilled airbox, performance clutch, performance exhaust system.

The bodywork should get a few marks taken care of too - needs new bumpers and i've got a complete 90-spec 16v arch kit to go on it along with a new set of 7.5x16 brock B6's

And after that the plans inc:-

Better Headunit & Speakers
Power Steering
air con
electric sunroof
headlight washers

and a few other bits and pieces

@MontanaGTD: Your project is the sh!t, man!  :P Your heading the right direction. I think just that GTI emblem is wrong. You should get a GTD one.
What about that red stripe grill? It's not stock, is it?

Yes red strip is stock - I hit a Pheasant doing 80mph and smashed the original grill - only had the spare GTi one!

Yeah, original, I meant original... So, it's not.
The red stripe grills are factory setup in the GTI's (some), I know.

There's another chap in York with a Black GTD, all original with only 57K miles on the clock, and his came with red striped bumpers & grill as stock (as well as power steering and a rev counter).
I guess I'll add a few more things to the retrofit list then    :D

Well after monthes of searching, I've finally found my diesel.  She's a one owner car with over 700K on her.  She was built in december of 1985, as a Jetta GL.  PW, PD manual steering, factory foglights, tachometer, factory alloys and sunroof delete.  Everything other than oil changes was done by the dealer (Autohaus of Windsor.  Windsor VW didn't exist back then!!!), til the warranty expired, and then all service was brought to Heinz garage, or parts were bought from Heinz garage and  installed by the previous owner in his garage.  She was oil sprayed yearly, and never parked outside.  Have every receipt for everything ever done...

Maybe I should take the TD out from Audi and put it in Scirocco. Wouldn“t that be cool 8)

Ok, I“ve done it now :D Scirocco Diesel have been running this summer. Had some troubes at beginning, but now runs fine. Dynoed and tested at quarter mile. nice facts!! for guys who (still) dont believe in vnt turbo's, i think this is the first IDI on board with +200hp, and its just a 1600cc  8)

What boost are you running now and how fast does it spool with the new settings?

normal i could give some feedback about my 1.9 with the vnt25 but i broke another headgasket, probably becouse of a not-flat head.  :?

btw, for what reason did you installed the upgraded rods?

Thanks 8)

I“m running ~35-36psi boost. It doesn“t spool instantly, but its pretty fast IMO. I should take a video of it sometime
As for rods... First, there is too many bent rods... Second, these are 20mm longer than stock => better rod/stroke ratio. Third, I got those "cheap" It“s funny how some people bend rods so easily, some will hold good.

Here are my IDIs:

First my old Rabbit which started as a 1.6 NA, upgraded to a BAE kit w/ intercooler in 2002 then to a factory 1.6 TD with intercooler in 2003.  Currently being restored and updated by my friend Jay.

My departure into Minis.  This is an N/A car that really goes like hell.  Has a 1.5 Pugeot TUD motor with a Bosch pump out of a 1.8 Fiesta.  I may try adding a turbo after I complete my next couple of VW projects.   I also have another Mini shell and a 1.7 Isuzu TD waiting transplant.

Last is my current IDI project.  1.6 Rabbit with turbo and manifolds from a 2001 TDI and a big intercooler currently being installed.

Hey all, new to the posts but have done a TON of reading from the site.  I think this is my 8th VW, 3rd diesel.  I'll try to be short about the description.  86 Golf, 1.6 NA, 5 speed, 128K miles.  6K less on engine, previous owner used tow bar to take to Texas 3 times....

I am the 3rd owner of the car but the first owner only had it for 6K miles.  The second owner bought it in the fall of 86 when he was 61 years young and I bought it in April.  Yes he was 82 when he sold it...  This by far has to be one of the cleanest MK2 Golfs I have seen in the area.  It only went about 20 miles each way to the golf course about 3-4 times a week.  It has never seen winter until this year.  Always garage kept.  Mann and Bosch filters since new.....I can go on and on and on about how nice it is but I'll let the photos do the talking.

I've repaired some minor things and replaced some warn parts here and there.  Pump is 'screwed' in just a touch   .  As soon as my timing tools come she's going to 1.00mm advanced.  I tinted the windows, added my stereo and added my filter mod.  She gets me about 40-44 mpg depending on how I drive it  :D   and the previous owner told me that he thought I'd burn her up runnin 65-75 every day!!!  He also changed oil every 2-3K miles b/c "diesel oil gets dirty quick."  HAHAHA it uses less oil now than it did when I bought it!!! Anyway to the photos...

This brings back memories. I bought this exact same car (GL with sunroof, air and cruise as well as upgraded stereo)  brand new from the dealer in 1991, but mine was not an eco, but a full 1.6TD.
That was one sweet car. :)

Thanks Jimmy. That is a pro shot taken by our EEM club photographer Jon Schusteritsch. It was taken last summer.

@ Stewardc Your Caddy looks factory fresh and way nicer than my Jetta.
This car does not have a sunroof, cruise or stereo upgrade, just factory air. It is on it's way to becoming a full 1.6TD.  I bought it from the original owner who opted for the European Delivery Option and picked up the car at Wiegmann VW in Hamburg Germany. He drove it around Europe and put 7,300 miles on it before it was shipped back to the USA. It now has 290,000 miles on it and runs great.

One I took last fall with winter mode steelies:

Weird.  Don't think I've seen this thread before.  from the original post, its tough to decide between a1 and a2.  I've had both.  the gli was always much more comfy, but the a1 is much more fun to drive .... ;D

I still see this sucker running around town.  gli I put a mk1 diesel into

Here's a shot of my drrty red diesel from yesterday's get together in Vancouver.

Lowered on a bilstein/HR sport cup kit, 2" drop in the front, 1.75" drop in the rear.

Wheels are OEM G60/corrado steelies, wrapped in Dunlop Direzza 205.50.15's [such a smooth grippy tire] Easy to roll into a corner without slowing down, or needing to heavy accelerate out.

Still missing 5th gear, and grinds from 1st to 4th while driving, however still retaining 7l/100km on a tank of diesel. Swapping it out with a good condition transmission this coming saturday July 9th

Did a compound polish on the body, paint/buffing compound to polish to synthetic wax

Painted the trim and bumper with flat vinyl paint

I think the only next few things I want to do are mainly comfort add ons, however i'm very compelled to get a EGT gauge and a boost gauge, along with a front mount intercooler just to keep the driving a little bit more at ease.

all in all the car is doing it's duty, and will most likely remain this way till I have enough banked away for a mk6 golf/jetta wagon.

my favorite colors blue, so i quite like it, and i like that little bunny there too on the fender.  looks like a nice paint job.  i was talking to my dads neighbor who used to be the service writer for the body shop at a toyota dealer, he said to use the good clear coat (which should always be used cause it has uv protection *** in it, costs 500 dollars alone, then u still gotta figure in the paint and all that crap, he said if ur gonna skimp it should be on the paint never on the clear coat.

PBS, silver was boring, and that's all I have to say about that. 8)

TrevOrbr, the guy was right. This was a bare metal restoration and the bodyshop guy said "I can use $100 clear or $300 clear....it's your choice". When I told him $300, he said that one decision told him how I wanted the job done. The paint is absolutely gorgeous. It is the original silver and an Electric Blue Pearl. It  has a lot of metallic, and simply pops in the sun.

Very nice Caddy.  I used to do some painting back when I had a garage and I went through all the stages from lacquer to the new BC/CC stuff.  Have to third the clear coat makes the difference.  Unless you totally botch the paint in the first place.  Then no matter how much you spent on the clear coat it still looks like a 50 dollar paint job.

Are those original Caddy wheels?  Did you have them reconditioned and powder coated?

Again nice two tone and use of the lines on the hood.  Did the same with a Subaru Justy for my wife about 12 yrs ago.  She thought it was over done but then it kind of grew on her.

No, the wheels are brand new (from VW Germany) 14x6 Mk 2 Jetta steelies. I'm thinking that stainless trim rings will look nicer.

I don't know about chrome trims on this setup.  The only other chrome add on you have is the exhaust tip.  How about having the body shop take some of that blue and make two 1/8 inch lines around the outside rim?

yup, my diesel ride is on here, 4 pages back tho..

and for real, i was NOT being sarcastic about your awesome ride.. lucky you live soo far away, as the temptation to walk over and take it is much lower  ;D (that last part was DEFINITELY a joke)

Ha! Thanks! I really want a Rabbit. The woman would never approve 2 toy cars. She gets nervous every time I see one on CL.

I heart the TDI painted on to the IC. Also, you are a brave soul leavin it all exposed like that. I'd be so afraid of the tiniest pebbles and other crap on Florida roads.

Thanks Dude!!! Ive been afraid about little stuff hitting it, but ive been running it like that for 2 years! One time i was on the interstate and a big ass possum was dead and i think it hit the IC lol  :o scared me for a bit their!

Changed picture as I took the advice off most all of you folks and found some Snowflakes.  Loaded them with some wider M&S and am ready for winter driving.

So this is it with the paint protector on the front.

Just for comparison Sport.  What I took off.

I am all about taking donations for the cause fellas.  I found two snowflakes on a caddy once and forgot to grab them.  Next time I went back they were gone to the crussssshhhherrrrrrrrrrrrr.....    Didn't know soon enough.

Any feed back on the two color split?  I was working off the interior colors.  Gray underneath the blue, gray carpets and seats.

I couldn't leave it this way now could I?
