super long story short ::) im pretty much a noob at diy on my car and its about time i start because i do not have the cash to go to a pro to replace my exploded clutch. i have a 1990 jetta 5 spd 1.6 na ,obviously diesel, and im hoping for some tips and tricks/ locations of guide books(or videos) or if you straight up know how and have the time to help a fool like me then any help is appreciated. ive been looking on the site and have not found any boards with this specific topic, but if there is one, please forgive my ignorance. my father and i are going to work on it and he has experience with larger engines but not small vws and has no idea what is needed for it. ??? also if you want back story, i was on the highway when big bang and flop flop flop from under me/ in the engine area and so i pushed in clutch went neutral and went to the side. engine still running. tried to see if it was clutch issue by attempting to put in gear, just bangs and metal flopping like an off balance old washing machine. was quoted by a pro ford 1200, i really do not have that, kinda need my car for school and work, thus asking for help.

I’m a noob myself and would like to have this info myself. I have done big truck clutches and from what I know and what I can tell about the vws you are going to have to raise the car and drop the engine and trans then separate on the ground or bring the engine out the top.
Also a good idea to get a upgraded clutch like a southbend or something like that while you have it apart

You sure that you don't have a grenaded CV joint, or kaput driveshaft? ??? Lots cheaper if it is?
Don't stick your head in too close if the driveshaft has broke free, it will hurt! ;D

You don't need to pull both engine and trans out at the same time. Just the trans from the bottom. You end up taking one of the engine mounts off as it is part of the trans and then you must support the engine in the bay while you remove the trans.
If you don't have a Bentley for that car check the library for one. Being a NOOB is only temporary while you learn and the clutch replacement is a good start.

thanks guys! ill see if i can find any info in the library and is the best way to make sure its the clutch not the other things mentioned to just lift her up?

It might not be a bad clutch. Check that one of your CV axles is not broken. If broken your rubber boot might visually still look ok. To verify get someone to put it into gear and release the clutch and you can watch your CV joints. If broken the axle will spin only on one side of the boot with probably a lot of crunching noises.

heres to hoping its a cv, been busy at work but

can post pics if you want, looked under today. the driver cv backed out of the tranny and all the bolts are almost all out.
would have to take off the wheel to get a real look at it and see if it broke anything inside
dont have enough time for that with being in the pnw all the rain kills me but i shall proceed when given the opportunity

Flanges flush mount to the tranny. Get one of the special bits that goes in there and tighten them back up. I think you will be good to go.

Hopefully, the bolts go back in. I had this happen recently, and a bolt snapped off, bolts bent, and the flange ended up getting damaged. Ended up replacing the flange, and both seals, since the tranny was drained.

hey guys, update since i finally got around to it due to my crappy schedule
the issue was that the cv axle completely separated from the cup that it connects to the tranny (?) those of you with the correct knowledge knows the names lol
the bolts totally came out and was knocking against everything and i had to replace the bolts, rethread holes, and even then thats just to get it running again.
i have a close friend who used to work on these professionally and said that if i wanted it to be daily drivable again it would probably cost about 2k so im selling it XD i love it but i aint got 2k.

Sounds like you're friend wants you to scare you to sell that car.
If you're not into DIY with a mk2 1.6D, you probably never will be. It's about as simple as they get.
On the other hand, used cars are everywhere and gas is cheap. Good luck

Yeah, 2 grand just to fix an axle back to the trany flange.
Even if the flange needs replaced it's a 2 hour job and few parts.
