Title: 1979 Rabbit AHU unswap, then re-swap
Post by: SpaceJanitor on March 12, 2015, 08:08:37 pm
So,

last year I bought a 79 rabbit with what I call a half swap 1.9L TDI AHU. This swap was done very well, but it used all the 79 V belt accessories, the 020 tranny and the wiring was done in the piggy back method.

Life was great, even when i got the A/C system working in this Florida heat. Then timing skiped a tooth when driving to work, exhaust valve smacked a piston, destroyed itself, the head, piston and slightly bent the connecting rod.

I bought a 1998 Jetta TDI car with 10k on the newly rebuilt AHU engine, now its time to do a full swap my way.

Goals
remove AHU/020 from Rabbit - DONE
remove AHU/02A from Jetta - working on this
remove all wiring needed from Jetta - working on this
020 5 speed removed and packed for shipping - sale pending
new linkages removed and packed with the 020 -
engine bay pressure washed -
manual steering removed -
power steering rack installed -
remove the old wiring -
install full OBD2 wiring, merge were necessary -
merge Jetta gauge cluster into Rabbit dash -
notch cross member for serpentine system fitting -
other *** im forgeting - added as necessary -

3/21
This weekend was spent removing all the wiring from the Jetta, mostly uncut and then starting on the rabbit.

I've done a few of the piggyback swaps.  My next one is a car I plan on keeping for a while, and I'm contemplating both swapping the whole car over to CE2, and also notching the rad support to clear an a/c compressor.  I'll be keeping an eye on this.

freshly pressure washed:

let the notching begin, it still needs to be sanded, some spots filled in and then painted.

Now comes the fun and long part, wires, wires, and more wires.

looks like fun; well some at least, when you get the wiring right most other things fall into place and work right, its when you have a prob in the wiring your running that can be a headache. goodluck

lots of work done over the weekend, pics to come. Also, figured out how to mount the MK3 stalks on my MK1 steering column.
