Title: Another different bandwidth wasting glow plug issue....
Post by: DieselBalz on March 02, 2011, 08:59:43 pm
Thanks OP and errbody else who answered. My glow plug light has been flashing and I don't know why so I have been considering changing the glow plugs to see if it will get it to stop. I can tell it was happening to the guy who owned it before me cause I can see on the cover of the gauge cluster where he put a piece of some kinda tape to block it out.

Now I wont waste the hour trying to figure out how to get them out.

It's weird, the glow plug light will flash completely random. At speed though when it comes on, it doesnt just blink on, it fades to bright, than blinks. Than for no reason and no given time frame, just shut off.

Anyone else see this?

In the 'states' you get a water separator  with a sensor. That can flash the g/p LED.
Don't put rubbish glowplugs into your car. It's extra work to keep replacing them.

This will apply to MK2 cars (1985-1992) only. If you're car is outside of that range, then the problem requires trouble-shooting via the Bentley manual.

Woops, didn't think I was hijacking though. Sorry bout that.

I have the Bentley and have read over the trouble shooting for the gp light. I have a 91 but have not been able to locate the water separator sensor. I replaced the fuel filter and it still blinked.  I would think that it would be near the fuel filter, but honestly have no idea. Any assistance would be much appreciated!

No problem.

The water separator is under the car, passenger side towards the rear, looks like this:

Update: I think my water separator has been bypassed. Here are some pics to confirm.

Is this the kinda part I should get new or would I be bad off sourcing one from a breaker yard?

Yup, yours has been deleted... and should you find any in the junkyard they will be just as brittle/bruised/damaged as the one you probably had.   ;)  And, with today's fuel quality and the water separator built into the fuel filter they really aren't needed.

There are two wires that go into the water separator... some folks just cut 'em, wrap 'em with a couple turns of electrical tape, and call it good. What often happens over time is that water, salt, dirt etc make their way under the tape and to the wires... connecting them just as if the water separator was still there, and causing the glow plug light to flash interminably.

So, I'd recommend having a look at the delete job... specifically how the wires were terminated and insulated.. and perhaps do 'em again as water tight and as separated from each other as possible.  Your symptoms may go away.
