Title: options i now have 2 tdi motors
Post by: 13mmwrench on October 04, 2009, 02:51:35 pm
so i have been working on swapping a 98tdi ahu into my corrado  and its pretty fairly close to running and i have most of the parts to make it run. then yesterday my friend called me from the junkyard and there was a 2002 beetle with a complete motor in it still  a few hours later i now have that motor sitting in my garage too.. the bad thing is its not all complete someone had already pulled the injectors and the maf and ecu and pedal assembly and hacked the harness so i only got the motor with injector pump, turbo and trans.    so the question is should i pull the ahu and throw in the new motor or stick with the one thats closest to running.  and should i stick with electronics on the new motor or slap on a m-tdi pump.     really just want to know how much more benifit i can get out of the newer motor.

and i'm not new to vag products  i'm a full time mechanic that specializes in vag   just dont have allot of experience tuning diesels   and i daily drive a 500hp vrt corrado in the summers

Personally i prefer the AHU over an ALH . keep the ALH for parts as a lot of the internals are the same.

run the ALH (long block, IP, Turbo) with the AHU's injectors, wiring, ecu, pedal cluster, Maf and what not. I don't know if its been done but I know the mk4 VNt turbo has been used on the AHU and so has the IP.

I think the main question with that setup is if the crank trigger is the same.  Anybody know?  The 1Z/AHU is a four window trigger.

the ALH is a much stronger engine, can take serious power

the AHU pump will fit with a few mods

im pretty sure the crank trigger is the same, not hard to find out, just look at it, if it isnt just change it for urs, i think they kept the same one until the PD

only problem you might find is mounting it in a corrado, let us know how it goes

also dunno if you are interested but if you use a BMM bottom end you can turn the 1.9 ALH into a 2.0 ALH with no modification

well maybe i'll just work at getting a harness and everything for the alh motor and either sell or put the ahu in another car   oh and mounting and installing into a corrado is no sweat

Been there and done that with both motors and I'd suggest using the ALH with the mk3 wiring. In fact I may go this route in the future.

Here is a topic on this very subject that i have kicked off: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=259005
