Title: First kill in my 85 Jetta TD: Mid 90s Prelude
Post by: Jettagli16v on October 26, 2008, 02:58:35 pm
Driving to work last night,
(My daily)
1985 Jetta TD, with 3" intake pipe, and 15 psi (MBC)

Smoked a prelude through traffic for like 7-10 miles.
Traffic kept his long legs in check, and we basically did 5-7 pulls from 65-90 Mph. I left it in 5th gear, let the turbo do the work (15PSI is nice!).
The suspension kept me in the game while cutting thru traffic
(VMaxx coilovers and hollow 25mm front sway)

I am new to boost, and I LOVE IT!
(I am also new to the board.. at first, I was disappointed with the low turnover on posts, but then I imagined if you removed the nonsense from the VWVortex, i bet things would turn slower too!)

Thats all...

15 psi only???? you need 20 psi man... thats when you really feel it pull

once mine hits about 20 theres no more smoke out the back.  so much air that it burns pretty clean, and the power is impressive for a slow diesel... of course a good exhaust & intercooler would really do some good

The post rate here is lower than vortex because at any given time during the day vortex has 800+ members on. (there are 1300 right now and 15 on here)

Wow I just saw on the main page...

"Most users ever online was 369 on Fri Oct 10, 2008 4:41 pm"

That sounds a little high to me?

Good smoke tale btw!!! I hate those preludes...

I am still trying to get anecdotal advice on what kind of boost levels are safe with this car...
I will do the EGT and exhaust before I turn it up again,
but is 20PSI OK on a stock car?

I know you crazy canucks like to clamp the wastegate line, but thats a little rich for my (daily-driven) blood. This car needs to keep getting me to work. (at least until I have built a nice motor to swap in at a moments notice)

The low post count is one of the things that makes this site so nice.

There is virtually ZERO bs going on here.

This is the place to come for knowledge  8)

Thanks for the help,
fellow yankee!

I still have so much that is covered by the FAQ that I am timid to post yet, but one day I will come up with something not yet covered!

Yeah, my second (and favorite) VW was a 91 GLi 16v, alpine wht. Sold it in 2000.

It has also been my name on the VWVortex since 1999 (when I owned her),
so it is my "Handle" if i have one...

"Brad"
makes for a lame online-forum-avatar-moniker
when you are some kid from florida new to diesels,
trying to impress the Canadian guru's of my vehicle...
