Title: Bots Killed Us?
Post by: ORCoaster on September 15, 2019, 03:01:16 pm
Just wondering if all that trash we had coming at this site in the last couple of months is keeping the older members from looking at this site.  I had written it off for awhile myself but I was assured by the Moderator that things would get better.  And they have, thanks for doing that!

So chime in if you used to come here often and have decided to come back.  Seems like the new topics are few and far between.  Maybe it is due to all of us trying to finish those last minute items before the weather really keeps the hood down and the tool box under the workbench.

Post away.

Wondering that myself!!

Stupidbook doesn't help matters!!

My Dad passed away Tuesday so I will do my best to keep the BULL*** off of here. It will not be easy though for a few days.

Sorry folks.

I lost interest in the old IDI's, been coming back to see if I want to do more with them or sell off my old stuff here.

Thanks for the replies guys.  You old pharts are the ones I was hoping to see respond.  You have the years of knowledge the hot shots just dream about.  And they need edjumucation to get their old rigs running. That is where you and this forum come into play.

Stick around here.  I don't see any other resource that comes close to this one.  At least not as civil.

Thanks again.

facebooks really done a number on all of the forums unfortunately and has been the biggest killer. Most were also bought (like myturbodiesel) by a couple large companies that made a business plan of modifying forums to be ad/sponsor/subscription heavy + pull data, driving away a lot of people. tdiclub saw a large influx from the dieselgate crowd but the older stuff is even dying off over there. Mark and I didn't want to see the same thing happen here, kinda like the mk1 td I've had sitting in the garage the last couple of years that I had to keep away from the stance kids  ::)

polar silver, seems to be a 3? owner car with ~170k km on it, last on the road a decade ago. Fair bit of rust around the windshield, some around the rear arches, sunroof leaks, DS door has dropped, but nothing out of the ordinary. Definitely a survivor, don't think all of the paint is original. High spec'd automatic, haven't checked compression but PO said they'd been over the pump, nozzles, and compression but couldn't get it going. It cranks a little fast but I'll check compression before throwing in the towel.  Have a friend with an AAZ to refresh and I do have a T3 turbo or two floating around... but may do a more modern swap while keeping it as OEM as possible.

Previous owner was an older gentleman with A LOT of cool projects. Had a diesel toyota and long box mazda truck on the property, a proper empire of dirt with an older case excavator and a lot of toys. Used to have a diamond silver metallic GLi that I drove coast to coast then did a CE2 conversion + obd1 aba swap into (old motor was worse for wear and the 4K had been robbed years ago by a dealership for a diesel trans). Soon as I saw this thing pop up I knew I had to have it as a replacement  :)

All I have at the moment, picked it up almost two years ago, just been storing it with a cover until I can find the time (have a mk2 gti16v on ms3 to finish first). Getting hard to find decent examples in Canada that's for sure.

Thanks for posting the TD Jetta!!

Looks pretty darn nice. Had a 83 Coupe TD. Should not have gotten rid of it.

Rare beasts anymore. TD Rabbits are scarce also. (Real ones)

They sure are, we're in a weird 50km radius rain forest in vancouver that doesn't really get snow and they only recently started salting, so compared to the rest of Canada our cars are pristine. Every 3-6 months a good mk1/2 diesel shell pops up for around a grand. I've been trying to get Mark to pick up this fella https://vancouver.craigslist.org/pml/cto/d/port-coquitlam-central-vw-1980-diesel/6966635751.html

but he doesn't seem to want a 5th project car   ;D

I don't drive a IDI anymore so it isn't as relevant. I also have a wife and 3 kids now so free time is a premium. I do enjoy coming back here every now and again and throwing my $0.02 cnd into the pot.

Well I still drive the ol' rabbit to work, however I have a wife and 2 kids. I'm lucky to find the time for regular maintenance and repairs. I get on here ever couple months but I'm afraid the days of experimenting and fiddling around with my first love are over for the foreseeable future.

We all have a daily routine Rabbitman, No fault for that.  Keep driving the Rabbit to work, show your kids how to fix it and when they become of age to drive one it will be ready for them.  They will amaze their friends when they offer to change the oil for a friend.  WHAT??   You know how to do THAT?

I still come on board once or twice a week, although it seems by the time I read a new topic someone else has already said what I would have said, so not much use in doubling up on stuff. At least that shows people are still helping to solve the problems. Plus the old Rabbit has been running quite well (knock on wood), so I haven't had any problems of my own to contend with.

If the post you read is the answer you would have provided you can always do a thumbs up reply and a What I would say.  Helps those who don't know that what they read is correct and not some shot in the dark.

Although we are talking about VW diesels so dark smoke and mirrors is sort of a way with us.
