im throwing around the idea of putting a 1.9 tdi in my 80' caddy. A buddy of mine told me that there is a 1.9 tdi that swamps right in place of the old 1.6 n/a diesel engine. I cant really find any tdi swaps that dont involve some sort of cutting or fabricating. can anyone point me in the right direction or is my friend full of ***.?

Will bolt in yes, but the IP bracket is integrated with the engine mount on the Mk1 platform, isn't it?

I haven't personally installed a Mk3 TDI into a Mk1 so my comments are hearsay. I suppose I should have given some more details. There isn't really any other engine that will bolt in without some effort. The stock mk1 exhaust would need changed. Air filter and intake would be custom. I believe you can use the mk1 gasser mount bracket with the AHU pump bracket and timing covers with minor modification. It would also require either an mTDI pump or the electronic engine management, pedal potentiometer, intercooler, etc.

I have also hersey of the ac on the ahu/1z can be ran but you need to clearance the frame horns. If you delete the ac I believe no cutting needed. MK1 caddy or rabbit engine bay should be identical, so any mk1 rabbit swap with the same engine you are looking at would be a good read to get what you need to know.

what about the ecu? i would really like to keep it mechanical, not a big fan of computer controlled? is it possible to do the swap without the computer?

Absolutely. That's how I have my AHU set up. You need a different injection pump; the go-to around here is the Land Rover 200TDI or 300TDI pump. It has the right advance curve, the right input shaft length and the right direction of rotation.
The injection pump mounting bracket does need to be altered a bit to get the Rover pump installed - it has a larger diameter mounting 'snout' than the AHU pump.
There's also the LT2.8 pumps which will work without any modification to the mounts, but they don't have the best governor for the TDI (apparently).

mk1 motor mount is integrated with the injection pump bracket, but you can just cut off the injection pump part since the tdi has its own stand alone injection pump bracket. or you can just use a gasser motor mount.
if you use the original mk1 transmission it will basically bolt in and you will just need to figure out the plumbing and electrical. if you use the tdi transmission you can just buy the mounts and stuff that make it bolt right in
