hi,
i need to re-do the seals (leaks) on my 85 jetta td. i purchased a "better" cam plate on ebay. it has larger cams on it, which will increase the pressure. before i go stiking that inside my pump, what should i prepare for, how should i take apart the pump so as not to get it dirty or loose the bearings and screw up tolerences, etc.

treat it like your a surgeon, clean clean clean.

Remove the top of the pump first (can do gov mod while there if not already done) then you can unbolt the back of the pump to get to the cam plate, its a good idea to have something to be able to hold the pump on it's nose so the rollers/ cam followers wont fall out..

I'm getting ready to do the same thing, 1.9 cam with a 9mm plunger and Merc nozzles. should be fun fun.

can u put everything off of a tdi onto a 1.6td like cam plat plunger springs and all that jazz?

I think it's better to upgrade to a 12mm plunger and head from a cummins 4BT.
A cam plate with a steeper peak will cause the plunger to skip from Peak to peak at high RPMs.
With the lower peaks skipping starts later, but he 12mm head still provides more fuel.
I went to the local bosch shop and he has some 12mm heads and plungers sets for $100.
If I remember right, you have to do a little grinding on the plunger to get it to sit nicely against the 9mm cam plate.
We were talking about using stronger springs to keep skipping down, at higher RPMs.

So the 1.9 idi cam isn’t a good one to use?

The profile picture I say didn’t show a more aggressive angle (I don’t think) just looked like a higher lift cam....

my new camplate has the number "426" on it. do you kno where i can find out what it is, other than larger lobes.

Ok cool, so the IDI cam is good...

I'm planning on the 1.9 IDI cam with a 9mm plunger and merc nozels, timing set to 1.07.
I wanted to go with a 10mm pump but I already have a 9mm and I dont think there is a big enough performance differance between the 2 for me to spend the $100.00 for the 10mm. I'll probably get better millage with the 9mm anyway.

On that link I posted you can almost see the # on the camplate to the right.
I can make out a 4 as the 1st # but I can't see the other 2 good enough to make a good call on it.
I was hoping that pic would help but it's jkust not clear enough sorry.

camplates have their curve after engeneering for a engine specific, a camplate with more lift give perfomance when you have it with stock (or the same) settings. but the egt's will be higher becouse you give more feul.

It all make sense when you can put a camplate in your engine wich makes better efficiency, or maybe when you go for a high reving engine a camplate with more efficiency on higher rpm.

i think this is lots of engeneering and most guys on this board dont have the tools etc to measure this out.

For that reason i agree with fatmobile, if you need more feul, go for a bigger plunger, you even can go for a 10mm wich supply +150whp on a idi.

Farmobile i like to know more about the plungersprings, those are used so the plunger dont bend, higher load is possible, only when its to much the camplate will go stuck on the rollers from to much load...
but for high rev engine's it should be better to use springs with more load, i also know some guys who use them. Another thing why you need those springs is the camplate do fly at higher rpm's, so you cant get all the power you wanted.

There are also difrent styles of plungers, i like to know more about.

i'm also still busy to make more dynamic timing advance, i hope to post soon more about this.

We know allready much trough years about those damn diesels, but we need to know so much more

"426" came plate come from AAZ engine 1993 and 1994, and it is installed in other IDI engine. 3.2mm lift and a little foot plunger, these AAZ "426" pump is set at 2300RPM + 150B first opening pressure injector.

Later 1.9TD AAZ have a new came plate "600", 2.8mm lift + bigger foot plunger, these pump is set at 2200RPM and 130B inj.

More lift = more potential of high RPM.

More aggressive slope or bigger plunger = the same result.

I have some of these two came plate in stock, if you are interested, and some other with different profile.
