Turbo models... Which kind/year is best?
« on: January 28, 2005, 04:16:56 pm »
I'm looking at getting a TD engine for my 81 rabbit in the near future. The current N/A is about toast and if I'm going to re-build I figure I should just drop in a TD.

I understand that basically any engine could be put in (I might need to replace some mounts or manifolds etc) but which turbo engine should I try to go for? I've been reading and it seems like vw used a few different turbo's. That's kind of what I'm stuck on. I don't know which one would be the best. Should it be out of a quantum or  jetta? Should be it one of the earlier/regular turbos or ECO? I haven't been able to find a post that addresses this so I'm hoping you guys could point me in the right direction.

thanks

-J

I think you should go with a hydrolic lifter motor 1986 and up i think no periodic valves adjustement as far as turbos goes i did have one with a garett t3 a little bit longer to spool up  cause its a big turbo for such a small motor but other than that very reliable my cousin has one with the kkk and he likes it spools a little faster in my oppinion use what you have as long as everything is in good running order hope that helps.

watch out if you're putting in a 1.9.  Some of them (or maybe all of them) are computer controlled engines and you need the computer and related hardware (basically have to re-wire the car).

Agree the kkk is a good turbo.  Fast spooling and makes good pressure.  It's smallish, but a good fit for the 1.6 diesel.

ECO is a turbo diesel.  The only difference is the injection pump.  Regular turbo diesels had a pump with a boost enrichment device on it, to give extra fuel when the turbo was operating in positive pressure (boost).  ECOs had regular injection pumps.  The idea was that the ECO would always burn very cleanly because it always had lots of air in the cylinders, but you wouldn't get any extra power because no more fuel was being added.
88 Jetta TD....sold for $1000, bought an 06 Cobalt, clearing out the diesel jetta stuff now

the eco's get teh same stock boost as teh turbo's, they just dont get the extra fuel..

they make 59hp stock 7 more than an n/a but 9less than a true turbo.

i have a 91 eco with 261,000 on it almost everythign original, everything on the motor is....  i believe the fuel pump has been "turned up" a little bit as this car flies for what it is.

it is much faster than my friends n/a. it does not get as good of mileage though...

spool up is very fast and this turbo is original with 261,000 miles on it so i think thats a test of reliability.

keep your oil changed and your turbo will last.

The 93-97 1.9 TD's (AAZ code engines) are NOT computer controlled.  I believe only the TDI's are computer controlled.
