General Information > Troubleshooting
misses???
(1/1)
jgueld:
Setup: 94 golf diesel 1.9 td., new air & fuel filters, new Tbelt & sprokets
Fine starting, ideling, powering
Problem: between 1800 and 2200 rpm, engine seems to miss (bucks)
Keeping the fast idel cable out, reduces/eliminates misses.
Question: What's the source of the misses, Injectors/pump, turbo??
fatmobile:
I take it this didn't happen before the new timing belt.
I always blame a miss in the midrange on bad cam timing.
Doesn't mean I'm always right but it has always gone away when I reset the cam timing.
It doesn't have to be off by much.
It's usually a noticable miss and like you said, it feels more like it bucks.
I've only messed with the 1.6TD ... I pull the valve cover, put the cam locker in and turn the engine with a socket on the crank bolt.
I turn the engine one way, till the cam locker stops it. I don't pull very hard, just enough to move it till it stops. Then I look through the timing hole ... maybe even make a mark.
Then I turn the engine the other way ... look and maybe make a mark.
If the flywheel timing mark is centered between these two marks, I'm good to go.
I'm GUESSING yours will be off by about 1/4" to 1/2".

thanks for the suggestion fatmobile.
The misses were there prior to the t-belt and nothing changed.
I'm thinking it might be happening just before the turbo kicks in, but I'm not sure and even if I was I still wouldn't know what the cause was.
