Should I buy this?
« Reply #15 on: July 17, 2007, 03:57:38 pm »
so i played around with the linkages... i found that i could put the car into gear with my hand, from the linkage arm.... i had my dad put the clutch in, then i shifted it.... so theres nothing wrong w/ the tranny - it shifts into gear noiselessly.

i followed the linkages back, and i saw this ball a bit further back that seemed to move a lot; without having any effect. I had the bolt on top of the bar holding the ball tightened, and voila - she shifted again.

i'm now the proud owner of a working 1990 diesel golf coupe.

i'll get some pics and show you guys. :)

I would probably go over the whole car to see if anything else is loose. It seems probable the owner maintained the rest of it in the same condition. See my signature. Good luck

I would be looking at things like wheel nuts, suspension fasteners, oil drain plug & anything else that they might have had occasion to touch. I would also double check oil and fluid levels everywhere. It would seem to indicate that there may have been a bit of sloppiness in the maintenance. If everything checks out you at least have peace of mind. Good luck Dan

That is a strangly clean car, good buy

Check the motor mount bolts, starter bolts, and control arm bolts in addition to what was already mentioned. You'll probably be fine though

Take it out and put in one from a different car. Be happy it's not a Jetta, you'd have to remove the rear glass to get it in and out

It looks like a typical body shop guy car clean in and out but greasy under the hood, those linkages probably transferred lots of black goo to your body when you were fixing them. I would get some gunk degreaser and clean up the engine compartment so that working on it is a pleasure not a pain. It makes a lot of difference when you are trying to see what is wrong with something if it is not the same black color as everything else. I'm a bit of a clean freak under the hood but the rest of the car looks pretty cherry. Cheers Dan
