New toy!
« on: January 21, 2005, 06:05:46 pm »
Just picked up a 92 Jetta four door, no air, 1.9 already installed. Seems a lot peppier than my wife's 1.6. Pump looks untouched, exhaust has a stainless elbow coming off the turbo, some kind of flex pipe (woven stainless?), and then I'm not sure yet after that. I like it! Have to get a better look at it in the daylight, may post some pics if it's not snowing tomorrow(I'll have to work). Dropped it at my local garage to have a safety done, but I don't think it will take much.

Seems to be too much movement in the engine compartment, having some effect on the shifter. More later.

That's my guess too. The front one's been tied dowm, PO says he broke it twice. Maybe the back passenger side mount is bad? Been too busy plowing snow all weekend to look at it!

mounts broken because of too much torque maybe?  can you retrofit the 1.9 mounts into a 1.6 car I wonder?

Brought the car home from a safety check last night. New front mount, pads & rotors on the front, shoes and turn the drums on the back. One backup light switch, fixed the license plate light, and plug the horn in. Ready to roll!

Have one (maybe two) issues left to solve. Radiator fan runs as soon as the key is turned on, with a toggle switch on the dash to kick it to high. Also might have a constant drain on the battery. Boosted the car when I picked it up, put a known good battery in at home. Started several times at the garage, but was dead flat when I went to pick it up last night. Put the original battery that came with the car (which I charged earlier this week, load tested great last night), started fine and drove it home. Unhooked it to keep it from draining, will check for current draw in the daylight.

This means I now have to get rid of 2 cars, a previously posted 1987 Fox(gas) nad a 1984 Jetta(gas) Floor on the Jetta is "continuity challenged" :) . I'll post some pics in the for sale section. Would trade complete running cars for ??? (Need a good set of wheels /tires...................)

Somebody did that to my Scirocco when I first got it also.  They had the fan hot wired straight into the ignition switch.  I spent a few days returning the wiring for that circuit back to normal, and put in a new fan relay.  Works like a charm now.  Why the hell someone would go through the trouble of rigging up stupid wiring like that when a $3.00 relay fixed the whole thing.  Oh well, this whole car has been an experience similar to that, where several times you ask yourself; "what in the WORLD were they thinking!?!?!"

Checked earlier today, only drain with the car not turned on and the key out is the clock in the dash and the radio presets(pulled fuses to find it). Guess I'll just have to watch it for a while and carry a set of cables..........

Exhaust looks to be about 2", no resonator, does have a muffler. Looks like there's loads of room for 2.5".

On my truck (1988 3/4t 4 door GMC powered by Perkins 354 NA) I downsized the exhaust from my original installation of 3.25" back to 2.5" in an attempt to help the engine carry better cylinder temps. Warms up a little quicker with the smaller exhaust, and didn't seem to lose any power. this engine has a factory tag on the side of the CAV pump that says 3150 rpm max, so we are dealing with a completely different animal. Is there such a thing as too big on these diesels? I know from experience with the perkins that too big with it ddn't do me any good!

For n/a, yes there is a point where exhaust velocity becomes diminished with larger diamater pipe.  But with a turbo, bigger the better.  ;)  Although, it usually doesnt make much sense to have the pipe diamater be much bigger than the outlet of the turbo, unless you plan on running an o.e. catalytic converter and quiet muffler. (making up for the restrictions with larger pipe) Usually the ideal setup for max power with any turbo is a dump pipe right after the outlet.  Not the most practical for day to day living, I'm afraid.
