Hey guys I have another question. Does the down pipe connect to the turbo? And also what is a good down pipe to get? I want one with a high flow cat on it. Thanks a bunch guys and sorry for all the questions I am a noob to all this. :?

you're running a turbo right??? what year vehicle??? pre '92 diesel doesn't require a cat :)  after that i'm not too certain, but most likely if the vehicle came with a cat, they will be checking for one come emissions time :(

You shouldn't be hearing a turbo at idle

You can if it's a VNT with closed vanes. I have a 2.5" exhaust and a normal muffler BTW.

I have performed a mufflerectomy, and I must say it sounds beautiful.  And I can hear my turbo while ideling... :D   And it sounds like a jet engine shutting down when I turn the car off. I am happy with the overall sound on the highway and street driving. I will post a video on youtube and post the link here. Thanks for the help guys!!

Let me ask you guys this, I like the sound of TDIs without a muffler and a bigger pipe and such.  Does removing the muffler and such from a TD create the same effect?  (Increase the turbo whistle?)  Of course, a decent intake would be a must as well I suppose.  So, what have you guys got a TD to sound like?  Vids, sound clips?

I did a ghetto mufflerectomy to my 93 Jetta (actually the pipe after the cat broke off) and I still don't hear my turbo whistle unless I'm very close to the side of a building, then I can hear it a bit. I kinda like the exhaust sound, kinda sounds like a Honda with a fart can in a way. It's a bit too loud for my liking, if it were just a bit quieter it would be perfect. I'm thinking I'll replace both mufflers with some straight pipe and a cherry bomb.

Keep in mind broken exhaust under the car sounds significantly different (louder, tinnier, more resonance) than complete straight pipe to the back.
Also make sure you end with a turndown, both for sound and it keeps the soot off the back of the car, trust me

I'm in the same boat, in the same city... that makes two AAZs with pothole mufflerectomies in the Port City.

FWIW, it is much louder when it exits under the car; it echoes around. If you get it going straight through & out the back, it is much quieter.

Addautomotive and Infinitrium, I know in NB you have the annual safety inspection, same as in NS, but do your cars pass with no muffler? I want to do the same thing, but after looking into the rules surrounding inspections, the car must have a cat, resonator and a muffler. Just curious how it works in NB.

On the advice of my lawyer, I decline to answer that question.

Hypothetically, if it looked like it had all of those components, but they had been hollowed out, it *could* pass.

just sayin, yo.

As for the hollowed out parts, the same hypothetical thought crossed my mind.

Dr. D's jetta had a 2.5" fron the turbo back, mandrel bent without a muffler. Especially when hot, you could clearly hear a very distinctive whistle out the pipe while it idled.

I have a 3'' mandrel bent Turbo back straight pipe on my 1.6l. TD. It's an awesome sound and I can definitely hear the Turbo at idle. On long trips I have to wear some ear plugs though 'cause I realized that I heard a ringing in my ears when I got home. Its not too loud in my opinion but everyone is different. I want to make the cold air intake with a cone filter down into the front there and that should really open it up even more. Right now I can totally notice a difference in performance especially when cruising on the highway. Its only really loud at certain RPM's like when your passing on the highway or hammering the throttle. I love it.
