I have found my future project -> 1.6 TDI A2 Jetta!!!!!
« on: November 07, 2007, 03:35:06 pm »
Looks like someone is developing a kit for under a grand to convert a 1.6 TD into a 1.6 TDI.

My wishlist:

-Junker MkII 1.6TD Jetta <$500
-TDI kit ~$1000
-VNT15 <$200
-custom 2.5" straight pipe exhaust ~$200
-tweaked IP $0
-80% 020 "LSD" shim kit and diff bolt kit ~$150
-ARP studs $150
-4 puck clutch $200

Total: $2500
Giddyness: Priceless

Don't forget to double or triple your total for a more realistic cost

Can you post the link for the TDI kit?

It's not available yet, but apparently he is working on putting it together for next year.

Yeah, I bet it would be closer to $5000 if starting from scratch.

It's near the middle of the page in white text. Same guy as volkspart or however it's spelled.

"I have the following exciting projects:

1. Turbo upgrade packages for 1.6 diesel engines and 1.9 SDI engines. This will enable you to convert you NA engine to a turbocharged engine. This will include an intake manifold, exhaust manifold, turbocharger, downpipe and oil lines. The main delay is getting the exhaust manifold...

2. TDI conversion kit for 1.6 IDI engines. I am working on converting a 1.6 diesel to a 1.6 TDI. The kit will include a complete TDI head, TDI pistons with rings, and cylinder sleeves. This is an incredible project. I am hoping for at least a 10% increase in efficiency. You will use your old injector pump, and timing belt. I hope to offer this for under $1000. This will be a complete 1.6 engine overhaul kit. You will end up with a new 1.6 TDI engine! I hope to offer this kit early 2008. I hope to have a prototype engine running shortly...

I should be able to sell all the parts needed to convert a 1.6 NA engine to a turbocharged, direct injection 1.6 TDI engine. And it will cost less than you think! "

Cool, but I dn't think it will run so well with the stock fuel pump.  The TDI pumps have a much higher pressure  to make the injectors work properly.  I'm not sure how even low pressure settings in the injector woud work since the fuel won't be as finely atomised.  I hope it does work though it would be pretty nice!
Waiting for a bigger better diesel to come along.

Intriguing, at the least, like to see it come to fruition. I won't be the first to buy one though

Is that website Peter Rothenbacher's site?

hey if it works... great!

i just don't see it working that great at all.  using the 1.6 pump will only lead to headaches etc. unless you know enough about DI pumps.

Would decreasing the pop pressure of the tdi injectors cause a problem? Anywho, I'll wait until this proves to be feasible before I would do it myself.

the TDI engines require high breaking pressures since they direct inject.  it will probably work with a lower breaking pressure, but will probably result in lower efficiency, and more than likely more black smoke out the exhaust.

might as well just spend the extra $1500 or so and get a real TDI head & block.

full TDI heads (with camshaft) going for around $600? brand new?    get 4 injectors and that probably brings it up to around $800, then mix that up with a good used block (possibly from one that had the timing belt slip & head = scrap.. might need new pistons, but could probably build the bottom end for around $800)

injection pump is pretty pricey, but don't cheap out on one.  for around $3000 you could get all the power of the TDI, and the efficiency!

i wonder how everything will work..  you need TDI pistons and the TDI head, and the combination of correct compression, and compression ratio.  just doesn't seem doable to me without some major modifications.

With the VWsource in Weston Ontario selling TDI long blocks for 1400, front cuts for 2700 (1year warranty in either case), that would probably be an easier way to get a tdi...

yea that seems decent.  wonder what shape the TDI's are in?  i got mine for $1200 from someone who bought it from Peter who brought it over from Europe.

from the pics i took you can tell it is in very good shape.  all standard stuff still in spec  :)

Would not it be easier to put a mechanical 1.9L Turbo pump on an 1.9L TDI block?  I have heard that this can be done, although I have never done it.

This would be much easier than rigging up a new head.
