Its not a last resort method, last resort IMO is after the damage is done trying to replace the sprocket, bolt and or the harmonic balancer. IF you catch an AAZ engine before the crank issue occurs replace the harmonic balancer, the sprocket and bolt. A lot of people just replace the sprocket and bolt and than they still end up with the failure issue later on.

All that said that said if you are starting to wear, pull the crank, get it machined, use a new bolt, use the new harmonic balancer, (you'll obviously have to use a new sprocket after the machining) and be done with it :D

Any advice on replacing the harmoinc dampener and pulley please?  I can't undo the 12mm bolt, and would rather not replace the sprocket since mine seems adequatly secured.

You don't need to remove the 12pt bolt to remove the balancer

I realise I don't need to remove the 12mm bolt, but also do not want to dmage the setup when removing the pulley.

I have just spoken to VW regarding the pully and they want £266 -> $520 for a replacment unit!!!!! :x

Are you planning on replacing the balancer then?
Is the balancer something you can only get from the dealer?
Every calls ive made they cant get the part...

I have the same issue my pulley is wobbling when idling but
looks pretty straight when you rev it up...

Im looking for a trustworthy shop around the scarborough area
to have someone look at it, any local diesel shops you guys wanna
recommend?
If doing this repair wont guarantee it from happening again because of the way they designed... i might just cut my losses; suggestions?

I am planning on replacing the pulley (which has a rubber harmonic dampener built in) since it is showing the same sypmtoms as yours!

It is an easy fix as far as I can ascertain, save the price of the pulley!

Machining the crank to accept a TDI pulley (or replacing with a new TDI crank) is permanent, and the "factory" fix.

Drilling holes and epoxying some pins through the pulley into the crank nose is a ghetto fix that seems to work, the downside is if you screw it up you can weaken the end of the crank nose enough to cause cracking, and it may not hold.  Your mileage may vary, I did the epoxy and pin thing but:

a) it was a beater I wasn't overly concerned about;
b) I used to be an aircraft mechanic and know a bit of what I'm doing;
c) My father the VW diesel mechanic has used it successfully a few times for customers who didn't want to pay for the crank fix.

Cheaper harmonic balancers used to be found here: http://www.autohausaz.com  I haven't looked there for a while.

I also got a much better price from VM Autohaus in Vancouver than from the dealer.

Don't seem to list pullyes with dampener anymore, although I can seem to find pulleys without a dampener, part number: 037105253
http://catalog.autohausaz.com/autohausaz/detailw.jsp?sid=ejawd2fku5eocs55nme5ir55&partner=autohausaz&product=037105253

Would this work OK? What do you rekon? Or am I asking for problems win the sprocket area if I don't dampen the system?

I placed my order yesterday from autopartsonlinecanada.com
i ordered the the crankshaft pulley 028 105 243T and (im not sure if this is the right part but..) accessory belt pulley 028 145 278E --> the tdi pulley and the td pulley were the same part number :S?

The crankshaft pulley arrived today, IMO very fast! But the ACC. pulley hasnt because its coming from vancouver.

I hope I can have the car in the shop by next week and go from there.  I havent pulled anything apart yet to see if the crank nose is damaged.  (Im avoiding the whole TB job since I just did one 3 weeks ago and after i noticed the wobble i checked that the belt did not skip) Im going to take little steps by replacing this crankshaft pulley first to see if that was the problem.  (Hopefully im lucky) If not, then i take it all apart and check the nose for damage, go from there... Im not in any rush with this car.

There is a little "nick" on it in the first pic.
I dont know enough to say its damaged, just to be sure; what do you guys think?  Will it affect the belt?
