I think the tachs were rare because they were a very expensive option.  Think about, how many usa made non-gti's came with tachs.  I've only seen a couple that came with the 1.7L engine and a tach.  add the fact that the people buying diesels were all about saving money and it's easy to understand.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Diesels weren't purchased to race around in, but slow economical dailys

Years ago...many years ago early 90's.  When I did my Callaway turbodiesel.  I went to the dealer and inquired about a USA Westmoreland rabbit diesel tach.  At the time vw still had a part # for it but it was over $200 just for the tach.  Which I thought at the time was a little excessive..since I bought the truck for $300.  I decided against ordering one.

Til this day I have never seen a rabbit turbo diesel tach in person.  I'd love to have one...but you're better off using a rabbit gti gas tach and a Dakota tach converter.  One it's cheaper, two if you ever go to a serp belt setup you can dial it in as the drive/pulley ratios are different over the old v-belt setups...this will allow you to dial it in to the right ratio.

I have seen the pic of the tach....I do know it does exist...but as I stated prior I have yet to see one installed in a rabbit from the factory.
