I finally got around to putting my PP downpipe on the Passat.  A bit of a Chinese puzzle getting it in, all the extra EGR plumbing gets in the way.

It sounds great just by itself, the kid down the street with the GTI with the fart can exhaust on it is insanely jealous.

Sir, I contacted you about a month ago and inquired about a downpipe for my '85 I then said I would call you when I had the cash. Well I have the cash now and since i've been excited to put one of your downpipes on my car for eight months now I would be highly disapointed if you couldn't make me one. I understand if there is no profit in it for you then its a pain in the ass to make them up. I was hoping you could install the rest of the straight pipe for me too and perhaps more stuff in the future. So maybe you could make some money off me there? Seriously I am willing to pay a bit more and i'll come down from whistler with cash. Right now my tailpipe rusted off and my muffler has a hole in it so I would really like to get this done. Thanks for your consideration.

Alright guys we are making new downpipes, starting from scratch, oh yeah they will be 3" as well... I am making a new post here in the vendors forum.

i've purchased three 2.5" downpipes from dave and its great to have the option of going to him instead of doing it yourself or getting hosed by TT. its too bad you're discontinuing the 2.5" mild steel versions. i second the idea of keeping them as an option, but raising the price. i personally would not be all that interested in a 3" stainless pipe. holds no benefit over 2.5" dia for me, the 2.5" booms loud enough 3" would be a cannon, and i wouldn't be able to justify paying for stainless at what, $3-4/Ib + additional fab time/cost, instead of mild steel which is all i need at ~$0.75/Ib. i'm glad you're expanding but i'd still like to be able to get the old pipes in the future. good luck whichever way you go!

Are you saying that the 3" pipe will be louder?  That is somthing I am not looking for.  So you think the flow/ back preassure difference between 2.5" and 3" will be negligible?

subsonic i speculate that for my application, 3" will be louder than 2.5" and that i will see no noticable performance gains. i'm not all that concerned with EGTs i don't think i'm often up high anyway. this isn't to say that a 3" pipe is useless, i just don't imagine that it holds any benefit for my application.

Long befor this board existed, the legendary Jake Russel tested his Hartmann 2.5" ss down pipe without the rest of the exhaust system.  There was a measurable increase in power.  So yes, a 3" down pipe can make more power.  If you just put around, the stock system is ok.

The 3" pipes will get your turbo spooling even sooner and lower your egts even more. And to boot for sanitary fittings, the 2.5" fittings cost the exact same as the 3" ones, so I'd obviously like to go the max performance route.

Yes the stainless material cost more, but with the sanitary fittings the fab time is greatly reduced. The mild steel ones that I've built int he past take way too long to fabricate and are complicated to build, the sanitary fittings will make my life a lot easier and really cut down on wait times for you guys.

As for how loud they are, thats completely dependent on the exhaust you have, and the combo of mufflers, resonaters etc I think yours is loud Lanny because without an exhaust system the downpipe just exits right at your feet

Keep the comments coming guys, be honest.

I understand that it cost alot to manufacture these with materials and labor. And you've heard this 1000 times but it would be very hard for me to pay that much for a DP. One of the main reasons i drive a VW is because it is cheaper.

Hahaha yep, making stuff like this for VW guys doesn't make a whole lot of business sense, which is also why we've started doing a lot more work on audi S cars, race cars, cummins trucks etc. Its just going to be really hard for anybody to make a production downpipe for these vehicles with the stock turbo and manifold layout and have it be "VW affordable"

My PP Downpipe
« Reply #29 on: July 15, 2007, 10:22:50 pm »
I wasn't sure where to post this, here or in Dave's topic about his new stainless 3" downpipes.

But I wanted to sing the PP praises.

This downpipe is awsome!  The quality is beyond expectation!

Not only that but it was obviously built around the same time that he realized that it was not profitable at that price point and he still delivered!

I am truly impressed!

Here is the proud owner pic.   http://s96.photobucket.com/albums/l193/PhlatOut_2006/?action=view&current=downpipe.jpg

It is attached to the TD that is being transplanted into my NA Jetta.

Thanks,
