My audi 2.0 TD, I have a few questions for you guys
« on: January 14, 2005, 09:47:55 pm »
So I picked up the syncro Quantum and the 2.0L TD yesterday and I was wanting to share my tenative plan with you guys and get some feedback.

So I want this to look nice, not leak oil , etc when it is all finished.
I also plan to get a little more power out of it. It was not originally intercooled so I want to add an IC assuming that I can up the fuel delivery enough to make use of extra air. I found thi thread which has some great info on pumps tweaks, but I do not know if they apply to the 5 banger pump, anyone know? Oddly enough this motor has a blow off valve to prevent over boost, I'll lose that and get an MBC, the turbo is a KKK

it has an odd (I've never seen one like it) wastegate

Is this turbo something to get rid of while the motor is out of the car? it seems to leak a little oil, but there is little shaft play, although the shaft does not spin "freely", here is a pic of the oil that appears to have leaked out of the turbo.

The motor has sat for sometime, so I was planning on replacing seals and gaskets. It came with a new valve cover gasket, exahaust and intake mani gaskets, 2 cam seals (one for eack end, timing belt on one end and pump belt on the other), and 10 valve stem seals.

While the motor is out of the car do you think I should go ahead and replace the head gasket? I found one for $41. What about the valve seals, from what I've read here it seems like they might be dried out. Here is a pic of the wettest spot around the HG, hard to tell where the oil is coming from.

Waht about this pic of the exahaust mani sealing surface, this is the worst of the 5, what should be done about this?

  Thanks in advance, Jack

EDIT What about this kinked oil cooler line, any ideas for cheap replacement/repair?

that oil cooler line almost looks like it is ahydraulic hose... hmmm u might be able to unbend it slightly.

One thing is for sure, get a boost gauge if you get rid of BOV.  Plus a manual boost controller and stick it where you can adjust it while driving :D

If you really want no oil leaks/burn, get new rings!  And maybe hone out the cylinder.  I'm pretty sure everyone here will agree that you should change your head gasket as well.

boost gauge is going in for sure, I will do the head gasket as well, then I can do the valve seals at the same time.

As far as the oil cooler line I was going to take it by a hydraulic hose shop and see what they can do.

Any ideas on where I can get new rings? I have googled some and found nothing. What about connecting rod bearings? I have found main crank bearings, but not the rod bearings.

   thanks, Jack

I don't know how to post pics but im sure if you do a google search for quantum syncro wagan you'll get some sites with pics..quantum is the us name for the 2nd generation passats...i think it goes dasher, quantum, then passat b3, b4 , b5, and b5.5 correct so quantum should be a b2 body code..i think im correct ha...???!! any how they are big and the syncro wagon have 5spd syncro awd /4wd system with center diff lock, and rear diff lock available..they haul a lot of stuff and are kinda butt ugly but are cool because they are awd and wagon ..any I want to do a Turbo diesel version..guys have done turbo gassere engines in them and they are fast!..i have seen a few 4wd burnout donuts at waterfest over the years from msouped up quantum syncros.... ha... they drivetrain is really similar to a audi 4000 quattro...
hope that gives you a idea... do agoogle search

Cool thanks for the link. So the Quantum I have is not in the best shape, and the motor is supposed to be in "running condition"... at this point I am just going to replace the belts (timing and pump), swap motors and go from there. If I got into the motor I would not stop untill it was entirley rebuilt, more than I can/want to spend on this right now.

You can have LOTS of fun with the black smoke.  My car doesn't smoke if I'm cruising down the highway but if somebody gets too close to me I downshift from 5th to 4th at 110 km/hour and nail it.  POOOOF, enough thick black smoke to fill up a gymnasium.  You can take your foot off the gas and nail it a few times before you stop smoking and it really startles the person behind you.  I bet it smells pretty bad too because it gets them to hang back for a while.  I should rig some spare parts to fall off the bottom of the car when I do this, I'm sure that's what they are expecting to come next.
